Title: British War Medal - poss Canada
Post by: nestagj on Friday 04 November 16 16:04 GMT (UK)
Good afternoon

My cousin has this medal in her possession - I identified it pretty quickly

The edge is very worn but we believe that it reads J E Pritchard and then has 15-CAN INF 045285

Our family name is Pritchard but we do not have a J E Pritchard in it.

Could this be Canadian - they did live in Canada for a few years and may have picked it up there ?

Although it looks bronze - I think it is silver.....checking with her.

Tried searching the canadian archive - probably not very well as it was my first time and have searched ancestry but of course I do not have much information.

Can anyone help me with this - thank you very

Thank you all

It is definitely a British War Medal and Canadian Forces were entitled to it.  15 Can Inf could well be 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Expeditionary Force (it appears to be the only infantry battalion with number 15).

That said, your trawl of the Canadian records seems OK, 177 Pritchards but none with JE and trying searching on parts of the number doesn't throw up anything obvious.  I can't find a service number that starts with a zero  - any other guesses at the number?  There is a 1915 nominal roll of the battalion on line but no Pritchards on it but that is an early date.

Good afternoon,

It will be made of silver along with the rest of the approx. 6.5 million. About 110000 were made in bronze for issue to the Chinese, Maltese and Indian labour corps.

Brilliant - thank you all for the quick responses

Can we find out where in Alberta - the Canadian links we have are around Edmonton ?

Is it worth me buying some credits for a**y or FindMyPast to track him through the years - I have no idea what records are available for Canada.  I have UK subs only

That's a good spot DB.  Joined in 1915 so not on the published 1915 nominal roll,  has a sister Miss Blowdwen Roberts in Pwllelhi, I'd put my money on him wouldn't you?

Any chance you could point me in the right direction

Hi,

Sorry just on my way out. The Homestead application, 4 pages, some is barely legible, it is by proxy, dated April 5, 1917, Miriam Gladys Thomas for John Edmond Pritchard of 756th Batt. Calgary
#446265,  tranferred to 15th Batt. age 24, b. Wales, last residence Calgary, occ. bookeeper, (this
could be her information, as his occ. is shoemaker on his attestation papers) paid cash $10. Discharged mobilisation 17-5-19, address not available. The last page was to inform the abscence of defence (he didn't "prove" the land, he had to clear, plant or build within a certain time frame in order to get the patent/grant) dated April 13, 1920.
Grants are here, and he isn't listed
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/land/land-grants-western-canada-1870-1930/pages/list.aspx?Names=prtichard&

No, don't buy credits yet, someone should come along to find him if he stayed in Canada, or
you could post him on the Canadian board with a link to this post.

Cheers,
DB

His attestation papers which db was quick to spot perhaps show that his family life was not straightforward.  Check out his next of kin which seems to have an original entry relating to a foster something called Roberts in Colwyn Bay and then sister Blodwen substituted.

That said, in terms of finding descendants to perhaps hand over the medal it will be in Canada that the answers are most likely to be found I imagine.

Great finds DB - the surname Thomas is to common to pick out the son of Cyril in Calgary and the daughter in Vancouver - we have a first name but no  married name, that would have been handy.
Presuming Hugh and Ceri may not have had children  ::)  Puts us a little closer if we can unravel there identities.  ;)

:( That's so sad about young Robert.

Empire Drive keeps coming up on death certs. Using Mary Alice's obit., her daughter has a
distinctive last name, and with Canada411, there is one listing for her at 5125 Empire Drive,
which matches up with young Robert's death cert.

to find the connection to the medal we would now need a few details on the cousin - to try and match her to the Pritchard family  ;)

I cannot believe how much information you have found on John Edmund' family.  Fantastic research ! Thank you so much.

We are not connected to these Pritchard's though.   I think that the medal has come into our possession through an Alberta link.

My aunt emigrated to Alberta in the mid 60's and lived there for some years.    She joined another aunt and her family who were already there. It was in the Edmonton area ..... Tofield and its surrounds I believe.

Sorry both had our grandchild staying over Friday and all day Saturday : then absolutely shattered ! Last night
Have just started looking through everything closely - a couple of things already.
I think the welsh location on the border crossing is Llangefni . This is not far from where his father was born. I have found his father and grand parents in 1861 on Anglesey but haven't gone any further yet.
As regards the corrections on the attestation papers ....could it read john Roberts foster brother - I think so and was then changed to Blodwen Roberts sister. I have a 1915 marriage near Colwyn bay a grace B Pritchard to John Roberts. I need another look on the location there too .
Out grocery shopping at the moment lol ! More later
It would be nice to write out a tree for them all for my aunt even if they are not related .

Thanks Mo. ;D ;D

To me it looks like Mrs. Jonah Roberts. There is a marriage in 1886 Anglesey for Jonah Roberts
and Harriet Pritchard vol. 11b, p771.

Cheers,
DB

Added: Correction: it should be Hannah not Harriet. Thanks mate. ;D

Agreed - brilliant on Edmund's history ..........

Can you see Thomas Pritchard in the later census' other than the 1891

I wonder what what actually happened to John Edmund Pritchard - himself ?

Is the J E Roberts in the 1901 aged 10 actually our J E Pritchard .......

1911 census (hope this is OK)

(adopted son) born Glamorgan aged 20
(adopted daughter born Glamorgan aged 23

So it looks like something happened between 1891 and 1901 to the family.  Although it states that his mother is still alive when the land grant was issued.

Nestagi - we cannot post details of the 1911 census because of copyright - you will have to remove the details or a moderator will remove it for you.

The mother had passed away in 1896 Cardiff.  Not sure that I believe the father Thomas had already died.

On  the 1891 he was described as a carpenter/joiner and there is an entry on the 1911 census in Anglesey which looks like it could be him - but I cannot post for copyright reasons

Free index shows this - which I can post - so have a look at him and his occupation !!

HI Sandra - I wasn't sure but thought that I could post small details from the 1911 if it had been researched by myself and was relevant to the subject.   But will delete .....

But do you agree ?

I will see if I can find the father .....

If the mother had died in 1896 who has he entered in the land grant initially found by yourself earlier on....

By the way - thanks so much for this - really appreciated .......what fun !

I thought I would try to see if I could find Blodwen's family although Pritchard and Roberts  may be a bit of a stretch ! My  parents' were Pritchard and Roberts and I married a Jones LOL !

When you check out the 1911 - you might find this entry interesting......... but baffling  ::)

Mary Catherine Graves - mothers maiden name Pritchard
GRO Reference: 1901  D Quarter in Toxteth Park  Volume 08B  Page 232

Not sure if its right connection for Thomas  ???

yes it is a bit baffling but also on that entry look at the years married any number of children.

Bit of a curve ball here - you know he is going out to his uncle Thomas Pritchard in Chicago - could that be his father maybe ?

Mother died in 1896 - father emigrated leaving the younger children with his sister, the older children move out to him and then later so does John........

have to go out now but will be back later -
