Title: death certificates 1700-1900
Post by: goblin on Friday 04 November 16 18:22 GMT (UK)
Asking if anyone knows whether or not reason for someones death is listed on their death certificate for the years of 1700-1900.  I would like to order some from this period, but only if the diagnosis for death is listed, and also  where would I seek or order one?   thank you gob lin

There will only be death certificates from 1837, when Civil registration began.

They can be ordered from www.gro.gov.uk -
Look up first in the indexes at freebmd

They should give cause of death.

Prior to 1837 you are reliant on Parish records of a burial. They do not as a rule give cause of death

Hi goblin :)

Which country's death records are you looking for?

What lizdb has said is correct for England & Wales but Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Eire all have separate systems.  Each member state of the USA keeps its own records, and the same is true of the Australian states and territories.

Me again :)

Do you have a particular reason for posting on the Oxfordshire board?  Most of the parish records for this county are now available on Ancestry and some of them go back to before 1700.  I have seen some with the cause of death noted, especially when there were epidemics of cholera etc.

Yes I will, that would be great, I have the date of death, but hoping to find out what they died from.  Daniel ward, born chadlington, oxon uk, died in crawley, uk.  I believe buried in the hailey churchyard.  His death date was 7/19/1863.  James Fawdrey, born  2/23/1772, witney,  oxon, died 6/8/1845, I believe he is buried in salford, oxon,uk   Sussanah ward, wife of the above Daniel, died around 1861, crawley, oxon,uk.  She also was born in chadlington oxon,uk  I believe she is buried in a church yard in crawley, oxon.  Thank you for any information you might find.  marlene

With the details Dawn has found for you (from FreeBMD) you can now order copies of the death certs from www.gro.gov.uk.   The death certs will give you a cause of death.

Well, I believe there is going to be a trial soon of digital copies of certificates for £6 each, so that might be a good opportunity to take advantage of. Or put them on your Christmas list!
