Hi
I've been researching the Ward family tree and have got back to George Ward (he was an ancestor of Sir Len Hutton the famous cricketer). Unfortunately records are thin on the ground.
Based on the 1841 and 1851 census it would appear that he was born somewhere around Fulneck, Pudsey around 1796 but I can't find any record and I can't identify his parents.
Also, he died somewhere between the 1851 and 1861 censuses (his widow is shown living with one of their children in Pudsey in the 1861 census). The only death I seem to be able to find is a George Ward of Woodville Terrace, Dewsbury (died in 1959) but this death (and the probate record) do not fit my George.
Any help on birth record and parents for George would be greatly appreciated as would any suggestions on the death record.
Thanks for any help you can give :)

Who did he marry and when and who were his children?

Hi Carol
Good question.
My research indicates he married a "Martha" (I'll come back to her) and they had three children, James (1823), Elizabeth (1831) and John (1835) there may have been others as this list is gained from the 1841 and 1851 censuses.
I believe that the "Martha" may have been Martha Parker - the 1851 census shows that George's Martha was born in Heckmondwike. However, the only record of a marriage between a George Ward and Martha Parker is dated 11 March 1821 but the record shows that both George and Martha were from Heckmondwike - he wasn't! I'm guessing that this may have been an error.
Hope this helps. And thank-you for such a quick reply :D

The marriage record only shows in which parish they were living at the time - i.e. when the banns were called.
It does NOT show a place of birth! ;D

Sorry, my fault, what I meant was that I found it hard to believe that he was living in Heckmondwike as his centre of vital interests was all around Fulneck. I would have thought it would have referred to George Ward of Pudsey and Martha Parker of Heckmondwike. That's why I'm slightly worried that this wasn't my George.

Thanks everyone :D
Ayrgenes, the Calverley info was very interesting, quite a good read. Unfortunately George didn't seem to appear. I think he was too lowly!
Calverley Lad, that could be my George. What is your source?
Does anyone have any evidence of the death of George somewhere between 1851 and 1861?
Regards
Bilham

If you go onto the home page of the link earlier, then click on DATABASE it will take you to a search page, type in George's name and brings up same info as Calverley Lad posted.
Did you also check all the Church Records on various pages? It can be quite time consuming to check everything.

The Calverley site shows:
George Ward aged 59 bur.24/7/1855 Pudsey All Saints Chapel and St. Lawrence - abode Wakefield
I wonder if after 1851 family moved to Wakefield where he died (death index shows a George Ward Sept.1855 Wakefield) and they then returned to Pudsey. 1851 Census shows no George Ward of that age living in Wakefield and the age of the above buried in Pudsey matches your man exactly.

Thanks Annette
I had a look through the Pudsey records and came across the same George. It looks like he is the only record but it feels iffy but I guess, as Sherlock Holmes would say, "once you have eliminated all other possibilities, what remains is the answer, no matter how unusual it is" (or something like that!).
This has been very helpful and thank-you everyone for your help and pointing me towards the Calverley database.
As yet we haven't managed to prove what my wife believed (that her relatives from Pudsey came over from Germany with the Moravians. I think the evidence is all to the contrary!).
