Hello! I am hoping some of you knowledgeable people can help me.
So, my 2nd GGrandmother is Anne O'Brien. I have this listing from Catholic Parish Registers, The National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland; Microfilm Number: Microfilm 09487 / 11
Name Anne O'Brien

Baptism Date Jan 1872
Baptism Place Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland
Parish Variants Gaynstown, Mullingar, Walshestown and Gaynstown, Walshestown

Ellen O'Brien
I have her marrying a William George Smith in 1889

FHL Film Number: 101256
Name: William George Smith
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec, 1889
Registration district: Athlone, Ireland
Volume: 3
Page Number: 1
FHL Film Number: 101256
In the 1911 census, by which time the couple were living in Hungerford, Berkshire, her place of birth is listed as Tipperary.
I am having a real struggle trying to find out any further information about Anne or her mother Ellen, and I am new to the Irish side of family history!
As Anne was illegitimate would she have been born in a mother and baby home? I don't see any point in ordering a birth certificate as no father was listed at baptism, so I can't imagine there would be one on the birth certificate.
How can I find out more about Anne's mother with just the basics of her name Ellen O'Brien and the fact the latest she could have been born (with Anne being born 1872) would have been around 1855ish?
Any advice would be extremely gratefully received!
Julie

Gives her father as John on marriage but possibly made up.

Her birth cert should be on that site as well.

Thank you for that info. It is much appreciated.
I have just been on this site and found the marriage cert as described above, and the register of Anne's birth, no father listed. The informant was a Rick English, Chief resident officer (I think) Workhouse Mullingar.

Ellen was born Tipperary in 1911 Census right?
Did Ellen ever marry?
You would have to wonder how she ended up in Westmeath if she was from Tipperary. Wonder if her family moved, might be worth a search of O'Brien's from Tipperary in Westmeath in 1901.

I have no information on Ellen. In the 1911 census Anne states she was born in Tipperary, but in all other documents birthplace is Mullingar Westmeath. Not sure why it would be different?
-
That's a bit odd, so Ellen is more that likely from Westmeath as well.
There isn't much to go on.
Anne wasn't in Ireland in 1901 was she? I don't see her straight off at any rate.

Anne was in the barracks at Hungerford, Berkshire as a soldiers wife

Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated :)

I was hoped there might be more of a clue in the image of the baptism, but it just says Workhouse, doubt the sponsors are related although no harm in noting their names.

Oh wow, great find, thank you!!
Ok, so I am reading Edward Gla.... and Catherine Cowley? What are the sponsors, are they Godparents?

Yes, Godparents.
Mmm not sure about Edward's name, people on the deciphering board might be worth asking, also a check for other workhouse births to see if they are people who work for the workhouse and do this regularly.
Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated :)
Your welcome, Unfortunately I'm not finding anything you didn't already know.

I think they are on number 2166 as well

Not always together but I think their names turn up quite often
2113 and 2114

Dead end with those two I'd say.

Yes I think you are correct. Gosh, your eyes are much better than mine! :D

I saw. I shall no longer be posting to the deciphering board! :D

It is interesting, although I'm not sure how useful it is that Anne was still using O'Brien when she married.
I wonder does that mean her mother never married, or at least not until Anne was past an age when she would change her surname to a step father's name.
-
Interesting indeed, and something I shall endeavour to investigate. Love family history!

There is no Census surviving where Anne and Ellen could be found together.
Unless the workhouse records survive which would tell where Ellen was from I can't think how else to find anything more on them. I no idea if such records survive.
A bit of information about the workhouse
