Hi, if anyone could please help me - I'm looking for information about Ernest Frederick McFadden (known as Frederick) born 3/11/1862 Wollongong, NSW, Australia died 30/9/1907 Durban, South Africa. In the death notice it states that he was previously married about 1880 but name unknown, one daughter by first marriage Bertha Newport England. I have copies of references from captain's that he served under, one was from the master of S.S. Oakby dated 14/3/1898 with address Newport Mon. The next positive sighting that I have for Frederick is 10/10/1900 when me marries Wilhelmina Orm in Durban, South Africa.
I found the above Bertha McFadden in 1891 and 1901 census, but wonder if her father's name might be on a birth cert?

Hopefully birth cert will confirm fathers name and give you mother's name and maiden name

1901 she appears to be with mother , now Eleanor now Collier and step dad Thomas Collier.
But Dad is still alive - so unless there was a divorce .... unless Eleanor is not actually married to Thomas of course.
But you say Dad remarries in 1900? So there must have been a divorce, or that would have been bigamous surely? That is - IF Eleanor is actually her mum and the previous wife of Ernest Fred. I suppose it could be that Thomas Collier was prev married to Mrs ex-McFaddan, and she had died and he had remarried to this Eleanor. Bertha would still be his step dtr, which is what it says on the census.
Her birth cert should make it all become clearer!

So, unless there are two Eleanors, or a divorce, then Fred wasn't actually free to marry Wilhelmina in 1900 .....

Frederick dies intestate, the lawyer does state in correspondence that he doubts that Wilhelmina was legally married as she could not produce marriage cert, could not remember where, when or who had married them!!! The lawyer describes her as either covering the truth or rather simple of mind - the estate was not worth anything in the end (property in Aus) so she and the 3 sons did not inherit anyway.

So - to confirm - you haven't actually seen this marriage cert then?
Even if Fred never actually married Wilhelmina, it appears that Eleanor DID marry Thomas Collier .

No, marraige date was mentioned on death notice, but no cert.
