Hi I was wondering if someone could kindly see if there was an obituary for the above in Romford libary. All I know is she died June 1923 and is buried in twickenham cemetery after dying in the Brentford area.
I have been in contact with various libraries and it seems Romford papers are the best bet.
Thanking you in advance.
I live in Wales otherwise I would visit libary myself. Thanks

Why Romford?
Neither Twickenham or Brentford are near Romford. Romford is east of London, Brentford and Twickenham are west !
Death
June 1923
Brentford

Margaret Hodson age 73

Sorry richmond
-
Do you have the exact date of her death/burial
-
No sorry. I looked on ancestry deaths and it states June 1923 thank you
-
The record on Ancestry probably means June qtr ie April/May/June
I can't see her burial here :-\

I thought you said she was buried in Twickenham cemetery in first post. That isn't Richmond.
What is the source of that burial? Does that not give you a date of burial?
Brentford is the Registration District in which she died. Twickenham is within that Registration District. Richmond isn't!

Yes she is buried in twickenham . No other details known only that she is buried with her daughter and son in law. I wrote to Brentford library but they advised that the obituary could be in the Richmond and twickenham times or Richmond times.
-
Sorry Richmond herald
-
Have you tried emailing Richmond local studies

What were the names of her daughter & son in law
-
Yes I have asked if they do look ups but no reply. Daughter Margaret Ann Pooley. Son in law William pooley
-
Sorry, I can't see the Pooleys in Twickenham cemetery either. :-\ Could it have been a local churchyard.
For someone to do a newspaper lookup you really need a clearer date than June qtr for the death. Not many papers of that era are on line so anyone looking for you would probably have to browse the papers for the possible obituary.
-
Also - usually there only obituaries for people of some note. Did she hold any important position locally?
Or do you just mean an announcement in the Birth, marriages and deaths column? Will that tell you anything you do not know? What are you hoping to find out?

What are you trying to establish from the obituary?
-
If there were any of her siblings still living at the time of her death. Thanks
-
Well found Dawn!!! I was hunting away and only got as far as the Margaret E Pooley in her 20's, that I then didn't pursue as it was a Margaret Ann we were looking for .... I should have looked closer at her!!!!

Have you got names and years of birth for the siblings?

Thank you Dawn, I must be having a bad day ;D I wasn't getting any result for Pooley either. At least now there is a date for a newspaper look up ;D
-
Unless she was a person of some social standing, it is unlikely an obituary would include the siblings. Most obituaries are an acknowledgement of a date of death and date for the funeral. If names are included they are usually the husband and children.
-
I've just phoned Richmond Local Studies.
They are suggesting the Richmond & Twickenham Times which they have on microfilm.
I can't get there easily or in the short term but I might get a chance to order up the newspaper at the British Library and take a look either next week or the week after.
-
Thank you
-
Some of the obituaries I have found locally give quite an explicit account of obituaries ie mourners, senders of wreaths, etc.
Margaret's two sons both died with injuries due to ww1 so possibly she may have a tidy obituary
-
Did she have many siblings? Can we not just trace each through censuses, BMD indexes, wills etc to see if any were still alive?
-
Morning. I know who her siblings were but two of them totally disappear after the 1871 census so I thought if I had a copy of her obituary and they were mentioned I know they were still in touch and living.
-
Are you willing to post the names of the siblings?
If people disappear from the usual bmd & census sources, they may have emigrated.
-
Or married/remarried/mistranscribed etc etc. More eyes looking may have success in finding what happened to them!
-
Hi yes Margaret's family lived in Christ college llanfaes Brecon. On the 1871 census William Lewis and sister Susannah now Williams were at the property. After that census I can't find either. Susannahs hubby was named William Williams. No mention of him either. Dad John resided there as well.
