Title: Port of Menteith/Ballanoughcater
Post by: Nicholas Blair on Thursday 10 November 16 21:04 GMT (UK)
Hello,

In the course of my family tree research, I have recently found that my 5th great-grandfather was born (or at least baptised) in Port of Menteith, which appears to have been in Perthshire in the 1700s, hence my query here.

My ancestor's baptismal record says he was baptised at a place called Ballanoughcater, as do those of various other family members (sometimes with spelling variations).  However, Googling this name draws an absolute blank.  I don't suppose anyone here has heard of Ballanoughcater?

Thanks,

Nick.

Nick,  this place is Ballanucater north of the Goodie Water & south of Lennieston Muir. About 2 1/2 miles east of Port of Menteith,  interesting name,  possibly from the Gaelic, Baile an Fhucadair = farm/hamlet of a fuller of cloth?

That's great!  Thanks for the information and the photograph.  It also encourages me that it's a small place, so I think I'm on the right track tracing my family back.

I must try and visit it next time I'm up.

Cheers,

Nick.
