Title: McKINNA/MILHENCH
Post by: Carawa on Sunday 13 November 16 04:53 GMT (UK)
Hi

I have hit a brick wall with one of my lines and am not sure where to go next.

I have Jane McKINNA born abt 1788 we believe in Wigtownshire but I am not sure where. According to her death certificate her parents were William McKINNA (a farmer) and Jane McKINNA (Maiden surename also McKINNA)

Jane Married Peter MILHENCH 9 March 1805 at Kirkinner. Peter was born abt 1777 we think and died 7 February 1831 at Mochrum. I do not know who his parents were.

They had the following children that we have been able to trace

William MILHENCH born abt 1806 died January 1830
Jane MILHENCH b 11 December 1818 (my line quite well documented from here on)
Alexander MILHENCH b abt 1821 died 20 march 1852 Old Brentford, Middlesex
Susan MILHENCH b abt  1823 died 27 July 1845 Mochrum
Peter  MILHENCH b abt 1828 died 4 September 1901 Bolton. (This line is well documented also).
There is a gravestone at Mochrum Churchyard with details of most of these deaths.

Is there any way I can more information on these people. :)

Trotter's "Galloway Gossip" has Millhench as the genteel version of Mac il Hench!

Skoosh.

Hi Carawa

Guessing this may be Jane with her father in 1841:

William Mckenna 80 agr. lab
Jane Millhench 40
Margaret Millhench 15
Peter Millhench 12

Address: Glentriplock, Mochrum

The 1841 census is the most limited in terms of info but Jane in later years gave her birth place as Mochrum.

I assume you have all that is available from general searches for the family such as http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY/1998-08/0903686084 and http://www.ajbooth.karoo.net/familyhistory/milhench/petermilhench.html

Reference here to the OPR marriage for Peter Milhench with the date you quote...but different wife?

9 Mar 1805 Peter Milhench - Weaver in Mochrum Parish and Mary McTier in Sloehabbert Kirkinner were Married here at Kirkinner on March 9 1805

Hi Monica

You have got me thinking.

I am now wondering whether Peter Milhench married Mary McTier first in 1805 as you found and then married Jane McKinna/McKenna later. It could explain the big gap I currently have in the births of the children as the first son was born in 1806 and the next child I have was born in 1818.

Can't lay my hands on the Milhench file at present so am not sure where my mother got the marriage date.

Thanks :) :)

Alexander MILHENCH b abt 1821 died 20 march 1852 Old Brentford, Middlesex

Is this detail from the inscription on the stone? This Alexander showing as a son to Peter and Jane?

I ask becauser there is an Alexander Milhench with dates 1777 - 1852 (20 March as you listed) who died in Middlesex, England. Early censuses for him below. He married in 1825 in Southark London, to a Mary Ann Manville. This Alexander was a widower at the time of his 1825 marriage.

He could be a brother to Peter Snr perhaps. Certainly within the same age range. Fairly comprehensive family tree for this Alexander on a/try here http://person.ancestry.co.uk/tree/17228133/person/19078715448/facts (you needs a subs to view though  :-\ :-\).

Also, is this Peter Jnr working in England in 1851? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGYG-HJL

Have you been able to figure out who the younger David is on this entry?

Hi Monica

I got the details on Alexander Milhench from the headstone at Mochrum churchyard.

It reads

Erected by Alexander Milhench, Old Brentford, Middlesex in memory of his respected father Peter Milhench who died the 7th February 1831 aged 54 years. Also of Susan Milhench his sister, who died the 27th July 1845 aged 22 years. Also of William Milhench, his brother who died in January 1830 aged 24 years. Also of Alexander Milhench the erector of this stone who died at the above named place the 20th of March 1852 aged 31 years. Also of Jane McKenna his mother who died in the Changue the 14th of July aged 92 years.

The details all tie in with what we have.

I am curious a bout the Alexander and David you mentioned and will have to see if I can sort out if they fit in.

Thanks

Carawa :) :)

Hi Monica

I have looked at that census. It is definitely my Peter Milhench but the census has been transcribed wrongly. It is a David Bradshaw not a David Milhench at that address.

How lucky to have the MI with such detail  :)

There are two deaths showing in London for an Alexander Milhench:

1st Qrt 1852 in Brentford, Middlesex
4th Qrt 1859 in Holborn, Middlesex

1851 shows Alexander Milhench Snr in Holborn, his second wife looks to have died in 1849 :

Alexr Methinch 76 carpenter widower b. Scotland
Alfred Methinch 10 son

Looks like family trees for the Alexander Snr have gone for the wrong death...

This Alexander also had a son Alexander, from 1851, Newington :

Alexander Milhench 21 shoemaker b. St Pancras, Middlesex
Mary Ann Milhench 20 b. Dundee Scotland
Eliza Milhench 1

The one I couldn't see anywhere in 1851 (or 1841!) was the Alexander, son of Peter!

Hi

I am a descendant of Milhench from the Port William/Mochrum area and we have several Peter Milhench's in our line.
However, I have not researched the 1700's so cannot say for sure we are in the same family.
I do have a Peter Milhench born 1824 whose father was Robert Milhench born 1797.
As I said, no further information on Robert other than he was the illegitimate son of Janet Milhench
I will dig a bit further and have a family member on the Milhench side who has done far more digging than I.
hope I can come up with something.

Hi Lyodia

Thanks for your message re Milhench family.

I have not done any work on this branch of my family for quite a while. I do have 3 Peter's in my tree but cannot at this stage connect them to a Janet.

My Milhench family stems from  Peter Milhench (B abt 1777 Wigtownshire) who married Jane McKenna (b abt 1788 daughter iof William and Jane McKenna). Peter and Jane had 5 children that I have been able to trace so far.

1. William b abt 1806 died January 1830 Mochrum.  Buried Mochrum churchyard

2. Jane b 11 December 1818, died 25 February 1906 Boghouse Cottage. Buried Mochrum. She married William McKie 12 February 1846 Sandberrick Farm. This is my line.

3. Alexander b abt 1821 died 20 March 1952 Brentford, Middlesex

4. Susan b abt 1823 Died 27 July 1845 Glentriploch, Mochrum. Buried Mochrum Churchyard

5. Peter b abt 1828 Mochrum. Died 4 September 1901 Halliwell, Bolton England. Buried  Heaton Cemetery. He married Margaret Bradley. I have good information on this line too.

As you can see there are gaps so your Milhench line may well fit in.

Regards

Carawa
