Title: Ships visiting Dundee Harbour
Post by: HeatherConnie on Tuesday 15 November 16 21:49 GMT (UK)
Hello, can anyone guide me towards any records available of ships arriving at and leaving Dundee at the beginning of the 20th Century. I am looking specifically for any ships in harbour around April 1904.

The local newspaper in a port town often records shipping movements in and out of the place.

Thanks, I'll see what I can find from those.

You should also consider looking in Lloyd's List. This publication is where newspapers glean their shipping information from. Published daily, it records shipping movements world wide. Copies, on microfilm, at the National Library of Scotland.
Whichever option you choose, it will not be an easy search.
Could you tell us precisely what you are looking for? There may be easier ways of finding the information you require.

Thanks for the Lloyd's suggestion. I have a great grandfather who came and went without leaving his name. All the family know about him is that he was a sailor. I don't believe there is any chance of finding him, but thought it would be interesting to find out what ships were in town around the time of my grandfather's conception, their cargoes and the countries they came from, as a way of filling in the huge gap in our family history.
