Title: Rees John Evan (Jones)
Post by: llangatwg on Wednesday 16 November 16 15:58 GMT (UK)
On a wedding parish record the name of my ggggrandfathers father was Rees John Evan.
My ggggrandad was Thomas Jones.  I don't know whether the surname was left out of Rees name or if his surname was Evan.
Thomas Jones was born approx. 1813 Llywel Breconshire.
I can't find record for his dad.
Could someone possibly help.  Thank you

Hi Llangatwg
There is baptism for Thomas, son of Rees John Evan, labourer in Cwmwysk (I think) by his wife Elinor on October 11th 1811 in Llywel

There are other baptisms in Llywel to the same people:
An earlier Thomas, May 2nd 1802
Margaret, Feb 17th 1805
Mary, Nov 1st 1807

You are welcome Llangatwg  ;D
Thinking a bit more, the transcription of the parish records assumes that each of the children adopt Rees John Evan's surname as their surname, i.e. Evan.

I am not too familiar with the patronymic naming system, but would have thought that if this was followed then their last name would have been Rees, so stuck as to where Jones came from?

Have you found the marriages of other children, or the deaths of either Rees John Evan or his wife Elinor

Hiya I haven't as yet to be honest.
Maybe someone can correct me but I am sure at some stage in history  a child took the surname of its mother.  Is this right anyone

I have no knowledge of the child taking the mothers surname, the nearest to this happening in my OH's tree is some of the women had the mothers maiden name as a middle name.

Maybe the mother remarried and they took the new husbands name.
