Hi people
I'm stumped trying to find the death of Thomas HUTCHISON, shoemaker and widower, last seen living aged 59 with his 16 year old son Archibald HUTCHISON at 5 Bell St Calton in Glasgow in the 1881 Census. I can't find him at all in the 1891 Census, so presume he died between these dates.
However, I can't see anything that looks like a likely death. He came from Antrim, but I can't see a death in that county which would suggest that he went home.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Is this son Archibald in 1891:
Archibald Hutchison 25 hammerman
Jessie Hutchison 24
Thomas Hutchison 11 Months
Address: 37 Wesleyan St, Glasgow/Camlachie
If so, have you viewed Archibald's marriage cert to see what it says regarding his father?

Have you viewed/discounted the three deaths showing for a Thomas as below:
1882 - Aged 59 in Hutchesontown
1890 - Aged 59 in Kelvin
1890 - Aged 71 in Gorbals

Hi Monica
Thanks for the responses. I haven't looked at Archibald's marriage (it is likely to be him, as he was an apprentice smithy earlier) as I suspect it would just say that his father is deceased, which is pretty much something I'm certain of now.
I guess I could take a punt and purchase a few certificates from Scotspeople and see if any are him.
Before doing so, it would be really helpful if someone could point me to a map showing the registration districts in Glasgow around 1891. I've had a bit of a look online but can't see anything that fits the bill. That might help me determine the most likely of the deaths above. (He was previously living in Calton district).

I have this map of Glasgow RDs saved from the Douglas Brown site which I believe is not available anymore:
-
Thanks Monica. That's exactly what I needed!
I'll try either the Gorbals or Hutchesontown deaths and see if I get lucky!
EDIT: Actually, a closer look at the age given for the 1871 and 1881 censi suggest it can't be Kelvin.
-
Unfortunately, neither the Gorbals nor Hutchesontown deaths proved to be him. (Unless he decided to remarry, and at an advanced age decide to throw in shoemaking and become a baker!)
-
It may help if you viewed the marriage of his son as it will reduce the period to search for his death

Found Archibald's marriage (out of town, at his wife's home town of Lochee). Unfortunately it doesn't indicate whether Thomas is dead or alive (his mother Sarah is not listed as deceased, although she died 18 years before). It's interesting that Archibald calls himself a Shoemaker (his father's trade) rather than a hammerman (more respectable?) and that Jessie must have been well pregnant at the time of marriage.
-
Any info regarding his death on daughter Sarah's marriage?
-
Don't know if it will help but he was actually married in Lochee, a district of Dundee.

That's worth a look. I'll see if I can find a marriage for her when I get back from doing my chores! Although given her birth date (c 1849) she would be likely to have been married before 1881.
EDIT: And she was. Susan Hutcheson 23 Dec 1870 at Calton to John SMITH.
EDIT: Whoops that's older sister Susan. I'll have a look for Sarah.

Unfortunately her father isn't Thomas. She has to turn up somewhere.

I think I'm clutching at straws here...but this is the only one that looks like a good fit...If they didn't know his last name that may not have been sure about his first. (CALTON, 1886).
EDIT: But there's a later correction on Scotspeople amending it to George HUTCHISON, so no luck there.
-
Some progress...
Found him in 1883, at his daughter Sarah's wedding.
Of course, its not made any easier by the name being recorded as HUTCHESON, and his first name now being "James"!
I might widen my search parameters a little!

Hi people
A couple of years down the track and I'm still no closer to working out what became of the Shoemaker Thomas (sometimes James?) HUTCHISON (sometimes HUTCHESON), who was born in Antrim around 1823. He was alive at his daughter Sarah's wedding in 1883, but can't be found in the 1891 Census, or in any death record. I'm actually going to be in Glasgow in a week or so and it would be great if I could find an answer before I get there. Any suggestions?

Thomas is with his family in 1871
Sarah aged 48 (wife)
Susan 22
William 18
John 15
Helen 13
Sara 9
Archibald 5.....born Glasgow
1881
Address
5 Bell St
Calton
Thomas age 59 widower born Ireland..shoemaker
Archibald age 16 born Glasgow....Blacksmith
Archibald appears to be married in 1891 no sign of Thomas in 1891 census
-
Yes, except for the marriage two years later (in 1883) he seems to disappear.
-
Why do you think that the James Hutchison mentioned in Sarah's wedding reg (as a witness?) is Thomas? This James likely a family member?
Monica
-
Thomas' son John married in 1889 to a Sarah McFadyen? If so, what showed for his father?
Monica
-
Monica- the marriage certificate has "James" HUTCHISON, Journeyman Shoemaker, who was a widower previously married to Sarah BROWN (who died in 1872). This all fits with what we have for Thomas.
I can't find the HUTCHISON/McFADYEN wedding on Ancestry or Scotlands People. Do you have further details?
-
Ahh..ok. See what you mean now re Thomas v. James.
Son John and marriage. I think there is error in what I saw online. I think this may be what happened but it is guesswork to consider.
There is a marriage in 1878 between a John Hutchison and a Sarah McFadyen in the Camlachie area of Glasgow. Possible census entry below for 1881:
John Hutchison 26 blacksmith b. Ireland
Sarah Hutchison 26 b. Glasgow
Euphemia Hutchison 1 b. Glasgow
Address: 33 Wesleyan St, Glasgow/Camlachie
There is a death in Camlachie for a Sarah Hutchison/McFadyen, aged 33, in 1889.
There is a marriage in Kirkintilloch Dunbartonshire in 1889 between a John Hutchison and a Mary Quail. The detail that I mentioned for a marriage (to a Sarah McF) showed a date of 8 June 1889.
There is then this 1891 Census entry which supports a second marriage for John:
John Hutcheson 36 blacksmith b. Ireland
Mary Hutcheson 42 b. Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire
Euphemia Hutcheson 11
John Hutcheson 9
Thomas Hutcheson 7
Sarah Hutcheson 4
Samuel Hutcheson 2
Address: 165 Springfield Rd, Glasgow/ Bridgeton

Just a note on addresses. John and wife Sarah show in 1881 at 33 Wesleyan St, Camlachie. Archie and his wife in 1891 show at 37 Wesleyan St, Camlachie.

1. Not to be confused with my Archibald Hutchison, son of Isaac and Agnes, b 1874 in Carluke, still there in 1891, but appears to have died in Denniston in 1891. Why did he move to Glasgow ?
-
broofer the short answer to that could be work. Carluke is only around 20 miles from Glasgow so no distance at all.

Maybe he didn't.
Glasgow Royal Infirmary is in the Dennistoun registration district, so if someone from outside the city was taken into the infirmary and died there, the death would be registered in Dennistoun.
If you haven't already done so, get a copy of the death certificate from www.scotlandspeople and see what it tells you.
If he did die in GRI, there should be patient records somewhere that you could see.
