Title: Neave & Andrews families in MUTFORD
Post by: windy_miller on Sunday 20 November 16 20:42 GMT (UK)
In researching the mills of Suffolk I have come across a curious fact at Mutford Mill.  The trade directories list the millers and they seem to alternate between Neave (Neeve) and Andrews (with an occasional interloper).

The Neave connection seems to go back as early as 1795 (William).
Philip Neave died in c1796.
The Andrews appear in about 1843 (David who had married Maria Fisk).
But Neaves are back in the Apportionment book with an Ann Neave owning the mill, with another Philip occupying the mill.
The Andrews are then list from 1869-85 (John and then David).

My questions are
A) are the Neaves and Andrews connected, in some way, by marriage?
B) were the Andrews really in Mutford (or some nearby mill site)?

Any help would be fantastic!

Hi Keyboard86,

I'm SERIOUSLY impressed!

So Ann was William's widow! And she was an Andrews!

Yep, Wm sounds the best.  I wonder if that means he dies after only 6 years of marriage.  Does if give ages of Ann & Wm?  Could Ann have still been realistically alive 54 years later Apportionment Book date?

Thanks again Keyboard86,

I have also re-read my notes and it was PHILIP Neave who died in 1786. Perhaps Wm's father?  Anyway I went up to Norwich Record Office on Saturday (from near Saxmundham - only 1 hour there and 1 hour back) only to find the don't open on Saturday!  Not sure how Norfolk folk who work are supposed to do their research!

They are open on Thursday till 7pm so if I leave at six I might get there to see them lock up!

Perhaps I should have checked on the www, but most RO are open on Saturday!  Aren't they!

DONT GET ME STARTED!!!!!
Time for a cuppa chocolate milk to calm down again!

Have you got the  article about the break in at the mill 18 Aug 1795 and sale of land, just over 4 acres in 1847. Both William Neave.

Hi Windy

Many Norfolk Record Office resources are also available at the Norfolk Heritage Centre, on the second floor of the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library (aka The Forum).

They are open 9am - 5pm on a Saturday, do they hold the records you need to search?

Hi chaps (or chapettes?),

I have the 1795 & an 1856 advert for the sale of the mill.

Unfortunately the records I'm looking at are the Manorial Records (and yes, Norfolk does hold some Suffolk records).  These are not available in the Forum, only at the record office.  Not really a public service if you work & pay taxes as by the time you've hiked up there the blooming place is shut!

Don't get me started!
