Title: c 1747 - 1821 Lewis Morgan, wife, Anne, Monasterivan Ireland
Post by: Rodney53 on Thursday 24 November 16 02:12 GMT (UK)
Four children, it would seem ... Moore, Anne, Eliza and John Edward Morgan.
Lewis Morgan looks to have lived all his life in Monasterivan.
Can anyone help with information about this family?
I am a direct descendant of the Rev. Moore Morgan.
Many thanks.

Hello Sinann,
Thank you for responding to my post.
I will see if I can connect the two Lewis Morgans.
Moore Morgan did indeed have a son William Conway Morgan. He had two other sons, Owen and John, plus a daughter Sarah, who married a William Watson. Owen Morgan came to Melbourne with his wife Sophia nee Powell and began our Morgan family in Australia.
I am grateful to you for your help.
Are you a Morgan by any chance?
Regards.

No I have no connection.
There is a letter in the Registered Papers of the Chief Secretary referring to Rev. Moore Morgan of Dunlavin, Wicklow, and another from him giving his address as Glebe House Dunlavin.
http://www.csorp.nationalarchives.ie/search/index.php
Could he be your Moore?

I am not related but from a bit of general searching today

Rev. Moore MORGAN married Margaret CONWAY in 1811

Details of their gravestone in Dunlavin is on a paid site
Moore died Nov 15 1857 aged 80 implies bc1777
Margaret died Jan 30 1862 aged 77 implies bc1785

Baptism of Sarah in 1812 at St George's CoI Dublin LINK (https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/2c926c0068845)
married William WATSON Oct 22 1834 Dunlavin

Owen Morgan is listed in the 1924 Alumni Dublin Edition as

John Morgan is also listed in the 1924 Alumni Dublin Edition as

There is also a college entry for Moore Morgan
MORGAN Moore Nov 2 1795 Pen (Mr. White) aged 16; s. of Lewis defunctus; b. Co. Kildare BA Vern 1800 MA Vern 1814

I wonder if your date of death for Lewis MORGAN as 1821 is correct as Sinann mentioned earlier a death recorded as 1785?! Something to consider

Although there is reference to a headstone for Lewis MORGAN from Jun 16 1821 here LINK (https://archive.org/stream/journalofirishme07fund/journalofirishme07fund_djvu.txt) search for Morgan

I can see you know about the Dunlavin connection http://www.countywicklowheritage.org/page/rev_moore_morgan
There are a good few results for Rev.Moore Morgan Dunlavin on Google.
So it is earlier you need.

Wow, you ARE good, Sinann. Many thanks.
Yes, the Rev. Moore Morgan of Dunlavin is my 4 x great-grandfather, and I am only just beginning to find out about his life. We in Melbourne knew Owen Morgan's wife Sophia Powell was born in Dunlavin but only recently learned that Owen and his parents/siblings lived there as well.
Thank you so much for the information about the Glebe House address ... news to me and much appreciated. I am trying to get to the primary documents you mention, no luck so far but will persist.
All good wishes.

Hello and thank you, myluck!
I am very grateful for any assistance others are able to offer.
I did know that Moore Morgan and his wife Margaret are buried in Dunlavin, but am thrilled to know there is a gravestone to mark the location. Many thanks.
The locations for the baptisms of Sarah and William are news to me as well, so again, my gratitude.
The evidence in Australia for the details of Owen Morgan suggest he was born in 1814, suggest but do not confirm.
John Morgan, Dean of Waterford I also did know about, and am glad to have my information confirmed.
The surprise information is the existence of Thomas Morgan. There is a record of the marriage of Thomas Morgan, son of Moore Morgan to Theodosia Belchere on familysearch.org This is the first reference to Thomas as another child of Moore.
The reference to the headstone for Lewis Morgan is I think the source for the 1821 date of death. But the other Lewis Morgan of Monasterevan may well beling to us too.
Thank you so very much for your help.
Best wishes.

If you just put Morgan into the search on the Chief Secretary papers Moore is result 22 and 23 on page 3. You will only get a discription of the letters not the original letters.

I should add that I have found evidence to clarify that the Thomas Morgan, son of Moore Morgan and husband of Theodosia, does not belong to the Reverend Moore Morgan. The other Moore Morgan was a resident of Cork and not a clergyman.
With such a relatively unusual name as Moore Morgan, I cannot help but wonder if the two were related fairly closely, cousins perhaps.
Cheers.

Sinann,
I am wondering if you know of a way to get to see the Will of Lewis Morgan which you mention in an earlier post? It would be fascinating to see it. Were they processed and stored somewhere?
Hope all is well with you.

I was hoping someone else would have answered this before I got back here.

As the second link I posted explains most of the originals were destroyed by the infamous fire in 1922, but I believe a call went out around the world for copies. That's were my knowledge of them runs out.
I'm trying to remember who here knows I'll try sending one or two PMs hope I strike lucky.

Even if the actual Will was burnt, maybe the contents were Registered... it is basically registering who got what from a Will.

Apologies for late reply. Morgans elsewhere have kept me preoccupied and I forgot all about poor old Lewis and his will. Senior moments happen more often these days.
Many thanks, Sinann, hallmark and Jack2227. I will follow up these leads and suggestions.
