Do you know where Henry was born?
What is the name of the child baptised in 1866?
-
Henwas born in walme but registered in shardlow
John Henry in 1866
And also a daughter born in 1870mary Elizabeth and mentions Henry on birth certificate.
On Mary Elizabeth marriage cert in 1889 Henry deceased
-
Thanks that all helps.
So in theory Henry died between 1871 -1889 - is Elizabeth down as married or widowed in 1881?
-
Interesting is this the children with their grandmother in 1881 - down as Shipston not Newton
Ann Shipston 60
John 15
Elizabeth 10
-
1871elizabeth is married and a bleachers mender
1881 Elizabeth single (not widowed) but a nurse in union workhouses Nottingham
So tags would seem to be why the children are with grandmother
And as you say names changed
-
Also can't find Elizabeth death certificate
-
Oh Elizabeth single in 1881 - hmmm is she listed under her maiden name? Something must have happened to the marriage.
-
Kind of struggling here :-\
Do you know where the children were in 1891 - did John Henry marry?
-

Parents HENRY/ELIZABETH
Fathers Occp Butcher
Abode Lincoln St

Hi I have now registered and picking up the thread as they are my family. Correction in that Henry was born at Wilne in Derbyshire but correctly registered at Shardlow.
Elizabeth Shipstone Newton was registered on the 1881census for the Union Workhouse as unmarried. Her two children were living with their Grandmother ANN shipstone in Basford and were recorded on 1881 census with her surname Shipstone. This may have been assumed by the recorder.
Also 1891 census Joh Henry is loving with other family in Basford. grandmother dead,no sign of Elizabeth. He married in 1893 and stated father was deceased. His sister Mary Elizabeth Newton married in 1889 declaring father deceased, John Henry was witness and she moved to Durham.

Thanks for that. I have looked at Re marriage for Elizabeth and seen these two that looked possible but rejected them, can't remember why ! That was some time ago as I have only just restarted this line of my family so will check them out again.
I am not totally sure that the census 1881 record at the Union Workhouse is the right Elsabeth although it fits apart from the unmarried bit and how she went from being Bleachers mender to a Nurse. I don't know what training or qualifications she would need for nursing ?
