Title: Biscuit Factories of Liverpool c1939 - Forbes St/Chatsworth St area
Post by: KitCarson on Sunday 27 November 16 13:38 GMT (UK)
Hi

Does anyone have local knowledge of the Forbes Street area (now gone I understand).  I have 2 young women in the 1939 Register (and others on the page) in the Forbes St and Chatsworth St area who were recorded as 'Chocolate Piper' and 'Icer Biscuit factory'.  What biscuit factories were in the area at the time?

cheers,

Kit

Wow, thanks HeatherJulie,

What a great company.  Sound a bit like the Cadbury family.  I currently live only about 10 miles from Leith, the origins of the Crawford Biscuit empire!

These ladies are only distantly related, but I do like to try and find out a bit more about individuals I find, but didn't know.

cheers,

Kit

Well spotted,  it's in the right area,  especially the mention of the "icing room",  they did not just make cream crackers  ;D ;D

There was a wonderful hoarding  on our. Way into town from Crosby that consisted of two representations of. Jacobs Cream crackers delivery vans, it was like in 3D. They were there for years

PS.   Remember Ken Dodd. Talking about the broken biscuit repair factory at Knotty Ash   >:(  ;D

Great maps.  Thanks very much.  I can see a route they could possibly have walked, but maybe they used a bus or tram.

Modern map shows that the factory area is now an industrial estate.

The trams ran up Tunnel Road- Durning Road to Edge Lane then to Binns Road and the Biscuit Factory. https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/336900/389696/12/101104
You can click on the four arrows symbol in the top right corner which will give you a full screen map that you can scroll about.

My Great aunt on my Grandma's side worked in Crawfords , in 1913 all staff received a small bronze plaque to commemorate 100 years of Crawfords biscuits.Photo of plaque  sorry one side a bit out of focus. The family name is Sammons but but have never had any replies when doing research over the last few years. My Grandmother's  maiden name is Daisy Sammons born 1888 around the Fairfield area of Liverpool .There was a coal merchant in the Old Swan area T Sammons around the 1950s/60s
Elsie Sammons married Walter Pugh in1915.  [right click and save image to view correct size]
