Title: Coroner's Report
Post by: Dee82 on Sunday 27 November 16 21:08 GMT (UK)
I was just wondering if anyone knows how I can access a coroner's report from 1911 for an ancestor in Cork City or is it even possible? The death record doesn't record anything about an inquest but just mentions that the information about the death was passed onto the coroner, so I assume that an inquest didn't take place for me to find the results of in a newspaper.

Thanks

Dee

Is there any way of finding out exactly what happened to my Great Uncle, who was a member of the crew of a ship docked in Cork. I have been told that he drowned, but don't know any details.I do know that he died on 30 January 1922. I would be grateful for any assistance.  Thank you.

His name was John McCormick. Born 1877 in Scotland. Lived in Canada and died in 1922 in Cork ( according to my information). 😏

I can't see the death in the civil records- what's the source for your information?

Ive been digging and found the information i got from the Nat Arch a few years ago. John McCormick was a 2nd Mate on the SS Sarah Jolliffe. He lived in Canada but was born in Scotland and was still classed as British. He drowned in Cork in Jan 1922. I've looked in the usual places but can't find any more information.

I think I have found a death cert for your McCormick.   There is an entry for a James McCormac (note different christian name and surname spelling).   He was a ship's mate aged 50 and drowned at
Queenstown,

It says certificate received from Richard Rice, Coroner, Cork County E.R ( East Riding)  Inquest held at
Town Hall, Queenstown on 1st day of February, 1922.

I don't know if I am allowed to post the cert here.

Hope this helps,

You are welcome.

If you have access to Irish newspapers online there might be a small report on the circumstances of the fatality.

Good luck,

Mary
