Title: FREE as in "no payment required" OR FREE so long as you don't want to "chat" ?
Post by: Peter Sanders on Monday 28 November 16 10:51 GMT (UK)
Is 'rootsChat' really FREE or is it like all other Ancestry websites which are money grabbing scams ?   I found the person I was looking for on rootsChat but there was no means of contacting them .... I'm guessing that to actually get to chat about geneology and exchange info there will be the usual "enter your credit card details"  and the subsequent "your registry payment will be deducted from your first purchase" !

Be not downhearted!  Rootschat is free!

Once you have made a few posts (I think it is three on the main boards) you will be able to send a personal message to a Rootschatter.

Rootschat is entirely free to use but to avoid spammers you need to have three posts on the boards before you can talk to a person privately. You can either post two more times, click on their name and then, on the left hand side, there is an option to "Private Message" or you can reply to a thread of theirs (as I'm doing on yours) and if their email address is still active they should get an email notification that you've replied so they can come and see what you've said.

RootsChat is made up of other researchers who often, through the goodness of their own hearts and through mutual interest in the hobby, use their resources to help the searches of others. :)

Rootschat is free and full of very helpful people, why not pop into the chat room? It's live chat and folk are friendly. Help is offered by people who have subs to various sites such as Ancestry..

Hi
Welcome to rootchat

Rootschat is free and full of very helpful people, why not pop into the chat room? It's live chat and folk are friendly. Help is offered by people who have subs to various sites such as Ancestry..

You will however reach a larger 'audience'  by posting any queries on the boards.  ;)   :)

Welcome to RootsChat

As mentioned above you need 2 posts to be able to use the personal message system on RootsChat.  If you tell us who you are trying to contact, perhaps we can help further.

Peter, if you meant that capital-A-ncestry, that could be where you have gone astray.

This site has resisted the behemoth. No connection with Ancestry dot anything.

RootsWEB, yes indeed, Ancestry.

Now how could this be a pay-to-play site, when there you are chatting out loud without paying? :D

I hope Peter has been able to read all the welcoming replies from so many RC members; it could be that not only can we help answer any queries he chooses to post and he can contact other people with the same family  history interests, but he may have special skills & experience himself to be able to help others in return - that's what we are about isn't it  :)

Josey

ADDED: Peter, in case you haven't already done so, you can click on your name in your original post, go to 'Modify profile' scroll down to 'Email notifications' then make sure you have email notifications clicked. That way you will get an email notification as soon as a reply is posted to a post you make.

RootsChat has no connection with Rootsweb apart from sharing the first part of the website name ;)

Yup, that's what I'd hoped I was saying. ;)

Just thought Peter might possibly have confused the two.

Well, I have enjoyed Rootschat for just over 12 years now, and not paid out a penny.

So when it says Free, it means Free!

Welcome.

To be fair Rootsweb as well as hosting many mailing lists, which used to be popular before the forum format became available also provides free unlimited webspace for thousands of FREE websites.
A number of my free websites have pages hosted on Rootsweb servers.
When Ancestry took over Rootsweb they kept the mailing lists and the Webpages free.

Most users find the mailing list format unwieldy and dated when compared to forums.

Cheers
