Trying to find information on the Elvy part of my family. This is my great grandmother on my mother's side.
My GG's name was Gladys Marion Elvy. She was born in Christchurch on 26/8/1892 and died in Sydney in 1974.
Her father was Harold Nelson Elvy (1849-1927) and her mother was Jane Susan Merrick (1870-1942).
She apparently had a brother called David Claude Elvy.
Gladys married James Arthur Strachan(McKenzie) on 16/111/1912 at St. Barnabas Church of England, Sydney, NSW.
Harold Nelson Elvy's father was apparently Sydney Harold Nelson.
Am trying to find out more information about the above people as in date of marriage between Harold and Jane as well as actual birth and death dates for them. Obviously would like to go further back if possible.
Finally my mother and I are trying to find out when and how Gladys and I guess her family got to Australia.
Thanks

Death of Rifleman Claude David Elvy, son of H.N. Elvy on 23 October 1918 is in The Star on 15 November 1918 (just after the armistice).
I don't know how long it took for news of casualties to reach next of kin.

Harold Nelson Elvy's father was apparently Sydney Harold Nelson.
There are a couple of online trees that name the father as Robert Hammond Elvy
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16067300
He was born in Kent, baptised in Sheppey in 1830. Parents Filmer Elvy and Jane Elvy.
There's a marriage for Filmer John Elvy and Jane Nettleton in Sheerness in 1821

I've just realised that you have much of this information already from an earlier thread redwolf.
I'll put the link here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=669284.0
-
Ah oops, sorry about that. I did a quick search to see if I already had but couldn't see it.
I guess I'm still wanting to work out when Gladys came over to Australia. Do I look at immigration or emigration records?
-
Hi Redwolf,
To avoid duplication of research and to keep all your discoveries in the same basket, so to speak, I would recommend that you continue using only your topic on the Australia Board. Passenger records into Australia are more likely to provide the answer to your question.
FindmyPast might help with shipping records into Australia.
http://www.findmypast.com/
I would suggest you try a large local library or similar that has access to Ancestry, and search the various UK Census databases for Harold and Jane MERRICK and their family, and Sydney Harold NELSON.
Ancestry might also have marriage records, as might FreeBMD or the LDS.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
https://familysearch.org/search
Good luck with your research.

I hope I am not duplicating info, but it seems to me that Gladys’ parents did not settle in Australia.

24 May 1927 Harold Nelson ELVY aged 59 years #3492
I understand that NZBDM PRINTOUTS are the better option for family history searchings. I should add that I have several generations of ancestors who frequently travelled back and forth NSW - NZ and I rely on their personal diaries for dates of travel rather than on finding full details in shipping lists either in NSW or NZ. There can be some sightings at the mariners website (an ongoing project) : http://marinersandships.com.au/
