Title: Fashions - Trying To Ascertain Year Of Photo
Post by: Princess Poppy on Thursday 01 December 16 09:57 GMT (UK)
I have two people on my tree called Beatrice Lily Walters and am trying to work out when that large bow would have been fashionable - can  you help?

My guess would be circa 1910 based on finding a number of other similar big bow images labeled as Edwardian and one with a 1912 date. The hairstyle may be a further clue?

I would agree with that.

Thank you.  In that case it must be Beatrice Lily Walters born 1881 which would make her 29 around 1910.  The other one wasn't born until 1903 and this lady looks older than 7 years of age. ;)

...or could it possibly date closer to 1920 and its the other at around 17 years of age?

posting this pic to compare as bow and hairstyle are similar

Wow!  Those photos are soooo similar.  As you say, even the hair looks similar except your lady seems to have more hair than mine.

This appears to be the same lady of my photo a little older?

She looks about 13 in the first photo so it could easily be someone born 1902.

Yes, I agree.  She looks closer to 13 than 29.

It's helpful to post the whole photo including the back as it can provide dating clues.

Not always possible to post the back.  The first one was sent to me by a distant relative whose computer skills aren't great.  I was lucky to get the photo at all!  I have the original of the second photo but I remember it being blank.

Hi

Somewhere, long ago, I found a ref to these bows coming into fashion in about 1915.  Also, the neckline/blouse reminds me of 1915-1920 fashion.

Agree with Gadget.
The neckline/cut away collar was a popular late WW1 style.
So 1917-20 would be my estimate.

Yes, the v-neck wasn't "invented" so to speak until 1913/1914 and due to the war it took a little while to get into production.

The hairstyle with the side part came in just post war.

I have a similar photo of my aunt with the huge bow, which was considered a hat as hats were still part of one's daily outfit. She was born in 1909 and looks about 12 or so in the photo.

Cheers,
China
