Post by: fgp on Friday 02 December 16 20:32 GMT (UK)

Edward was born in Bolton 1827 and died in Wales 1896

In 1968 he married his second wife in Pontypool in October 1868

How do you know Margaret's name was Chapman - is it possible that she was a widow when she married Edward?

So that shows her maiden name was Chapman, but not that she necessarily married Edward as a Chapman.

I was only able to find Margaret in 1861 married and living in Wellingborough with William and James Ed.
The family has always thought it was Chapman but I like the idea she was possibly married prior

we have her as dying in Pontypool in Monmouthshire at age 31 again family memories I am willing to relook at any options. The Children of the marriage are correct as James edward (born Dudley) who married Ellen Furguson was my Great Grandfather I have the Birth Certificate 3rd June 1856 Wolverhamton street Dudly Listing Chapman as the Mother Maiden name

Thank you
Francis

Widow Taylor or Walch or Welch

If Margaret had children from an earlier marriage 1847 to 1858 then they could be with her in the 1861c if not then an earlier marriage looks doubting. (though the children from the earlier marriage could be with her late husbands parents on the 1861c

Hi again are you certain of the death of Edward Parkinson in 1896 "Wales"  as he is in Carmarthenshire in 1891 with Emma,  so a possible burial is Edward PARKINSSON 3rd June 1893 Dafen aged 70 abode Pleasant Place notes Certified under the Burials Law Amendment October 1880 by the person having charge of the funeral

The problem with the GRO index from Southport is their index of BMD is independent to the local register office records. Your problem is you don't what part of the country the couple married also not all church records are transcribed in index form online by LSD

Very sorry, but:

From Lancashire BMD - Edward Parkinson married Ellen Norris at St Mary, Penwortham in 1853.  Margaret Walch married Thomas Heywood, same venue (the other two names on that page).

Thank-you for the research. its greatly appreciated
I've checked what record I can with name variations and possible any pre-marriages and always come to a dead end.  I am starting to consider they were not married.

then i need to find Margaret's family prior to 1861
I have a possibility of her parents being William and Mary with Children being James, William and Margaret in the 1841 and 1851 census (the name of William would tie into the naming of her Children as a family name)
the place of Birth is "Barton on Irwel" its not "Manchester" as she lists on the 61 census but close and Manchester is probably easier information to give on the census

Any thoughts

Francis

No, I don't think that's the correct baptism  :(
Found the family on the 1841 and 51 census.
They have Ann born 1831 but not a Margaret

So-with no marriage-no baptism for Margaret Chapman that could suggest a Quaker and not all Quaker entries are on the Nonconformist website. -  :(

Hi all,

I’m a descendant of Mary Ann Parkinson (b 27 Aug 1861 Kings Lynn) and Joseph Partridge (b? d Birmingham 1899) and am returning to genealogy after a very lengthy break.

I’m in the middle of tidying up the complete muddle that constituted my research but am keen to take my Partridge/Parkinson/Chapman lines further back. My Partridges are even more elusive than the Parkinson/Chapmans and when I looked into this many years ago I suspected (hoped) the families may have travelled the country together.

As I say I never moved on from the novice stage of genealogy but hopefully some of the following is relevant:

1) Birth certificate Mary Ann Parkinson, born Aug 27th 1861 at (?) Yard, Norfolk Street, daughter of Margaret Parkinson formerly Chapman and Edward Parkinson, a herbalist. (Interestingly, the registrar was named Horatio Nelson who I believe was the grandson of Lord Nelson).
The 1861 census, giving us Edward and Margaret as living in Wellingborough, was taken on April 7th 1861 so the family must have moved from there to Kings Lynn between then and Mary Ann’s birth in August.
There were seventeen other Chapmans living in Kings Lynn at the time of the 1861 census, three families and six individuals. One of the families lived in ‘Thurrock Yard, Norfolk Street’ which is either close to or the actual place of Mary Ann’s birth.
MARY CHAPMAN, 66 ,Head, born Hunstanton, Norfolk
ANN CHAPMAN, 41, Daughter, born Kings Lynn
WILLIAM CHAPMAN, 21, Grandson, born Kings Lynn, and curiously an ANN CHAPMAN, 72, Lodger, born Kings Lynn.
Is it possible Margaret had a connection to this family or the other Chapmans in Kings Lynn?

2) Certificate of Baptism John Edward Partridge, son of Joseph Partridge and Mary Ann Parkinson, June 5th 1892, St Peter’s Catholic Church, Cardiff. Edward Parkinson is listed as godfather.

3) Marriage Certificate Edward Parkinson (36, widowed) and Emma Watkins (38, widowed) 1868 Pontypool. It’s difficult to decipher but says the church was Catholic.
Edward and Emma’s residence is simply given as Pontypool, her father being David Thomas, a collier. The big news though is Edward’s father is given as Francis Parkinson (deceased), a builder.

4) Edward Parkinson’s occupation on death certificate of Margaret Parkinson (d Dec 26th 1866, Frosnant, Pontypool) is a cotton spinner.

5) One family member claims that Mary Ann was known as Polly.

Cardiff and Birmingham are two of the main clusters for Partridges, and to a lesser extent around Pontypool and Wellingborough, so the theory that they travelled with the Parkinsons holds up.  Indeed, in the 1861 census Edward and Margaret live two doors away from a Partridge family in White Place, Wellingborough.

Anyway, my apologies for the ramble and jumbled up information but hopefully it all helps.

Steven
