Title: Bannister/scriven, Shropshire
Post by: alveleyhistorian on Monday 25 July 05 14:27 BST (UK)
Hi there,
Can some kind soul possibly help with any info on this family ?
Robert Bannister was born in Leominster and married Alveley born Catherine Scriven during the 1870's.
The 1881 census records them living with  family at Cookscross Alveley, Shropshire  -

Robert BANNISTER   M   Male   34   born Leominster   Shopman Provision Hand
Catherine BANNISTER   M   Female   24   Alveley,   Shopmans Wife
two children -
Robert J. BANNISTER      Male   5   born Birmingham
Fanny E. BANNISTER      Female   2   born Birmingham

But then they seem to "disappear" for a few years ( they are not on the Alveley census of 1891 or 1901 )
But  daughter Fanny "reappears" in 1897 in the Parish Church Registers -
BANNISTER FANNY, aged 18-daughter of Robert Bannsiter married John Harvey Stant (aged 24- Bricklayer)  13th April 1897.
Any help or  info on any of the family much appreciated
kindest regards

In 1891 Fanny lived at 49 The Village with her Scriven grandparents. She is 12.

Interstingly, a Henry France lived next door at no 50...and as Robert James Bannister married a France (m. Agnes Louisa, daughter of John and Mary Ann France), is there a connection????

Any specific questions for me???

Have you any idea where/when Catherine Bannister (Scriven) died.  I have just found out that her husband Robert died in 1884 in Winson Green prison, i am unable to find Catherine anywhere .  I am new to this web site so am 2 years late with proceedings.  Also any ideas where to look for information why  he was in prison.

Went to salop yesterday and read through parish deaths for alveley looking for Catherine Bannister but to no avail.  I have looked to see if she married again but no luck.  Am a bit concerned because of where her husband died.  On  her daughters  marriage  certificate  where fathers name should appear there is line drawn.  Alveleyhistiorian we have been in touch before concerning the France family.

Ginger, I am also following this with great interest.

Are you sure that the Robert Bannister who died in WG was Catherine's husband? Can you share how you know that?

I am wondering if Catherine Bannister died aged 24 in 1880 in Wolverhampton,as per a search on free BMD?

Any thoughts on that one?

scriv2.  On 1881 census in Alveley Robert and Catherine appear, Robert aged 34  and when he died in WG  he was 38 which ties up, also the 2 children  from the marriage were born in Bham.  This also proves that the Catherine in Wolves is the wrong one.

Yes..I suppose I was clutching at straws and kind of hoping that the census entry in 1881 was her parents either double entering her in error  or not knowing where she was. - as has happened on another branch of my family.

Ah well, it would have been a neat solution.

As all my Scrivens are in and around Alveley ( as far as I know anyway), I'm not sure which parishes will be relevant.

OK, we know Catehrine's family, and we know the children were born in B'ham ( why - we don't know !)
Are we sure that this Robert who dies in Jail is "our Robert Bannister". There were many Bannisters in WG at the time (I've checked ) Is there any paperwork showing his next of kin or home address  at time of internment ?
I doubt the death cert will mention any next of kin.

All fascinating stuff !!!!!!!! :) :) :)

How did you checkprisoners in WG i would love to know.  No next of kin on death cert.  Would a visit to Bham archives help also there was a inquest at the time of death.

A quick "google" showed many Bannisters detained in WG during the late 1800's.
Have you got the death cert ? Any interesting info on there ?

A possible inquest document - fascinating ! This gets better and better. These often mention a family member or reference to abode etc.  (Just "Alveley" spelt badly would be a blessing ! )

Had a quick look at Birmingham city archives website and we might be in luck -

"Inquest files are arranged chronologically so you will need to know the date of the inquest. This is given on the death certificate "

So a trip to brum would certainly help !  ;) ;)

Dear Scrivens and related folk,

I am looking for Mary Scriven (1723 Much Marcle), m Richard Whittaker (1721). She was, I believe, daughter of George Scriven. Does anyone have such a scriven on their records?
Thanks so much,
Al
