Title: Tovey - a common middle name?
Post by: SamuelF992 on Friday 09 December 16 15:31 GMT (UK)
Hi all

I've had trouble for a while finding information on Charlotte Rees (1811-) from Carmarthen and her husband John Isaac Edwards from Pembrokeshire. Haven't found any conclusive birth records/baptisms for either, however, they do have sons called Evan Rees Edwards and Charles Tovey Edwards. Rees is obviously from the mother's surname, is it safe to assume that Tovey is also the surname of an ancestor or was it a common middle name in Wales?

Best wishes
Samuel

Hello
The marriage banns between Isaac (bookbinder) and Charlotte, in December 1832 residing in Dame Street. Charlotte is residing in the same street.
The marriage record in Feb 1833 is witnessed by Thomas Lloyd and Charlotte Jones.
The 1851 (both living in Dame Street ) of Isaac, and 1861 census (says John ?) gives a birthplace of Narberth.
Looking at the Narberth baptisms - a possible baptism is 1815 in Narberth of Isaac to Richard (hatter) and Jane Edwards.

If the above baptisms was your Isaac, the 1841 census for Isaac and Charlotte includes:
Richard aged 8 (possibly named after his father?)
John aged 6
Ellen aged 4
Esther Mary aged 2 (later death announced 15th July 1843 in Welsh Newspapers online)
Charles T aged 10 months
In 1851, additionally:
Charlotte aged 6
Handel aged 9
Thomas aged 4
Mary A aged 2
Evan R aged 0

Hello Mar

Ah fantastic! That Baptism definitely works. Not only is Richard his first child, but Ellen's full name is Ellen Jane Edwards, so that makes perfect. Thank you so much. :)

I cant see a baptism for Charlotte I'm afraid, to see if there is a link to  the Tovey name.

There is a marriage in Bristol on 20th August 1810 between an Isaac Edwards and Ann Tovey - probably co-incidental (in terms of being a relative) but worth keeping the info in case

I have a young girl born in the 1840s with her maternal grandmother's maiden name as a second name. Helped me find the wedding of her grandparents.  :)

Yes, mine did quite often, and my Devon family used grandparents maiden names as well for some children  :) :)

I found that too. An interesting one indeed, although probably a coincidence as you say. Can I ask where you found the Baptism records for Narberth?  :)

They are in the FindMyPast parish records (subscription)
There is also a baptism of James on 30th May 1817 to the same parents
I cannot see a marriage of Richard and Jane I'm afraid
 :)
