Title: UK lunacy patients admission register Ipswich
Post by: Joanne on Saturday 10 December 16 07:57 GMT (UK)
Just come across an 1884 death of an ancestor in the UK lunacy admission register.  It says the asylum/hospital was Ipswich.  Does anyone know if this means the St.Clements/Audrey's mental institute in Melton please? I can't seem to find any more details about the actual location

Thank you in advance

St Clement's Hospital, Ipswich, was opened in 1870 as Ipswich Borough Lunatic Asylum so it seems to be the most likely candidate.  This link gives its history:

Thank you GS.  Very interesting but sad at the same time

It is sad, particularly as most of the patients were probably suffering from ailments which nowadays could be treated, such as depression and anxiety disorders.  Another profoundly shocking thing is the number of women who were placed in asylums because they became pregnant outside wedlock, or shamed the family in some other way.
