Hi
I dont know if anyone will be able to help me. I am having trouble in researching my mother's side of the family as her Grandfather and Grandmother and Mother came to England from County Mayo sometime between 1841 and 1851. All i have is an 1851 census where they were living in Birmingham with their children.
The names I have are:
James Towey born c1797
Catherine Towey born c 1804
Patrick Towey born c1824
Mary Towey born c1826
Margaret Towey born c1830
Andrew Towey born c1834
Catherine Towey born c1840 - my great grandmother
Ann Towey born c 1844
They were all born in County Mayo as far as i know but that is all the information I have about their life in Ireland.
I would be most grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction to further my research.

Although Griffiths Valuation was taken after your ancestors had left, it may give you an idea of locations where Towey name occurred.

At the 1851 census, going over to the next page will show more names in this household.
At 1861 census the name has been transcribed as JOWEY.......James, Catherine and daughter Ann. Also widowed daughter Margaret CALLAGHER (should be GALLAGHER), and her sons James, Thomas and Patrick living at Dale End .

I posted this thread on the board whilst trying to trace my great grandparents James and Catherine Towey.
It has been some time now but despite trying many avenues I have not got much further with finding out exactly where my ancestors came from.
Someone from Ireland did give me a clue that the Toweys in Mayo were generally to be found in a place called Ballaghaderreen. I was wondering if there were any resources I could use now that I have this information.
any help would be gratefully received.

Hi there. I would be interested on any information on James and Catherine towey from mayo. Ann towey their youngest child according to your records was my great great grandmother and married Thomas varley from cong mayo. They then had my great grandmother Ann who married thomas hart and they also had Catherine known as Kate.

Sorry I have not come across your Toweys yet.
Records before the late 1820's are so hard to find .
But just wanted to say that iif you wondered why they emigrated then read The Killing Snows by Charles Egan. It is fiction but tells of the great famines in Mayo and gives you vivid insight into how the families had to starve or leave.
I am part way through and am finding it very readable.
