Title: 1851 & 1861 susan chick
Post by: gjervis on Monday 12 December 16 14:41 GMT (UK)
Susan Chick was born in 1845 in Axminster to Henry and Sarah Chick.

I would be most grateful if someone could see if the family is recorded in the 1851 and 1861 census returns.

Many thanks

Graham

Could this be them in 1861? In Gloucester

Charles Chick    40 - tailor
Sarah Chick    39
Susannah Chick    15

RG 9, 1766, 7, 8

all b Axminster. Not sure how Henry becomes Charles, if they are the same family

Hi Mabel

If you mean the ones in St Aldgate Street, POB is Dean (Forest of Dean) on GR transcription.

 :-\ :)

Giggsy

Just looked at the image and the writing is pretty dire! Does look more like Axminster though.

Yes them, but if you look at the image POB is Axminster, Devon. the handwriting is a bit sharp, so maybe Devon has been misread as Dean

In the meantime, Gloucester Archives apparently have a record of a Henry Chick, tailor, pob Axminster c1821 being committed to prison in Feb 1861

Further records show Henry Chick was accused of attempting to committed suicide. He was discharged a week after his committal.

He was 5ft 3 1/4, hazel eyes and had HC tattooed on his right arm and imperfect letters on his left.

Matthew was a railway labourer and the family moved frequently across the country.

Many thanks to all that have contributed.

If I can sum up where have got to.

Henry Chick married Sarah Dean in 1844  in Axminster. Susan was born a year later. By the time she was 5 she was living with her widowed aunt Susan Chick.  So it would seem that her aunt had married one of Henry's brothers. The other people in the 1851 census are Samuel aged 17 and Edwin aged 16. But these cannot be the children of Susan (Susan would have been 56 years old when Edwin was born). Henry was committed to prison in Feb 1861 so probably difficult to find in the census for 1861 if he had been recently liberated. There is a death of a Henry in Axminster in 1863 but his age is not available.

Now what do we make of Charles Chick born 1821? Could he be the same person as Henry?

He was born also around 1821 so we may have Henry, Thomas and Charles as brothers and sons of Henry and Sarah.

There are numbers of Chicks in Axminster in FamilySearch. In 1841 the family of Edwin and Samuel are living with their father Thomas and have siblings Thomas, Harriett, Louisa and George (no sign of their mother).

Regards
Graham

That ties up with that Henry being Susan's father given the suicide attempts in 1861.

His wife Sarah Dean may well be the Sarah Chick aged 27 working in Ilminster in 1851.

The relationship with Thomas's family is still a puzzle but it is almost certain they are related.

There is the Dean relationship Sarah Dean b 1824, Mary Ann Dean b 1829, Robert Dean b 1774.

What is puzzling me is the 72 year old widow Susan Chick in the 1851 census.

I guess there is no 1841 census returns that may throw some light on this.

many thanks

Graham

Is there any sign of the elderly widow Susan Chick in the 1841 census?

I really appreciate your help.
