Looking for info on my great grandfather Thomas Holohan born 1858/59, His parents John James Holohan a Police Sergeant and Catherine Doyle. His siblings - Martin born in Marborough Laois about 1842; Michael born 1848, married Jane Ellen Charles in 1871 in Nenagh. Both Michael and Thomas came to Australia in 1879 but both died in their mid thirties.
Any background on John James Holohan and Catherine Doyle would be greatly appreciated.

If you mean Maryborough and the family were Catholic you can look through baptisms and marriage registers-

Well yes, aghadowey, the spelling in some sites is Marborough.
So lets help roxy51.
So, in 1879 they were on the ship called "Devon" and they arrived on the 5th Feb. in Brisbane.
As Jane married in Nenagh I checked the Griffiths Valuation records.
A John Charles lived in Sliver Street. This was in 1852. Is this her father? He was the only male Charles in Nenagh.
I know the Church were they married as I was Baptised there.
If you google/search
St Mary Of The Rosary Nenagh you will see the Church.
Do you know of a lady called
Anastasia Holohan? if not it doesn't matter, it's just that she went to Australia in 1865.

Nothing wrong with verifying the correct location and I have posted a link to the church records which will help if the family were Catholic.

Thank you ladies. My mistake - it should have been Maryborough - typo.
I don't have an Anastasia Holohan but then I don't know if I have all of Thomas' siblings listed. Thanks Maggsie, I have visited the site and found a photo of the church at Nenagh. When Michael died, Jane married again within 4 years to a Danish man. However that really isn't my direct line, but I will investigate if John Charles was her father. It sounds like an English name doesn't it?
The Holohan brothers came out here for a better life I guess, but their early deaths left Thomas' wife with 5 young children, 4 went into a Catholic orphanage while my grandmother went into service aged 14. My great grandmother turned to drink, a life she led until she was found drowned in the Brisbane River in 1922. No doubt the result of her addiction. :'( Her children disowned her.
Can you suggest how I would find details of John James Holohan's police service?

I had a look to see if Ancestry had the info on John Holohan (the Father).
I did get .........
Enlisted in 1848 aged 21.

There was also a John Holohan who was promoted to a Lieutenant with the Irish Revenue Police back in the 1830s as per records on findmypast.
This looks to be unrelated as just found this notice:
Holohan, Frances, Clare Street, Limerick Chronicle 06/02/1847, widow of Capt. John Holohan, late of Revenue Police

Re the above - Maryborough was correct spelling, but older people from the area always pronounced it Marborough, so it would certainly appear in some records as that.

but I think that John Holohan was stationed in Limerick in 1849 and appears to be single.

Yes there are 3............
Jno Holohan = Limerick
Jn Holohan = Queens
John Holohan = Kilkenny
All about the same age. I went back to the page but can't find it.

I see now, this is the same John and he was in different stations.
The record I got was just the year he enlisted, mmm, yes, his records are needed.
so 12168 is the number to look for.

Martin was born 1842 so John needs to be a man married before that date.
Already married when he joined up, or married before 1842.
May be worth looking at Martin in more detail.

Yes quite agree,
Martin b 1842 parents are John Holohan and Catherine Doyle.
I searched by parents names only and got Martin.
The year is what Roxy stated.
I am not a member of rootsireland now, left in November, this is where you would get the info.
