Title: Phoebe Morson - please help?
Post by: kelzies on Thursday 15 December 16 22:57 GMT (UK)
The mysterious case of Phoebe Morson. I can't find her anywhere.

According to her 1742 marriage to John Wright (in Lyddington, Rutland) she's from Cottingham. I presume she was born around 1720 since her last child was born in 1758.

I tried the Family History Society and they couldn't find her in their records. Living in Oz I can't get to the Northamptonshire Archives so I'm unsure if there's anything available there.

I'm hoping someone has the ability to please help me find her :)

Hi kelzies.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

There is no mention of a baptism in the Northants Indexes for Phoebe.

Hi Sandy :) Thank you!

And thank you for having a look - could she have married a Morson who died pre-1742? I was thinking about that earlier. I haven't seen the original record of the marriage (only a list on a disk) so for all I know she could be a widow. That could explain her absence. They may not have put that in :-\

Kellie.

She was from Cottingham at the time of her marriage.  That doesn't mean she was born there, just that she had lived there at least 3 weeks whilst the banns were being called (assuming marriage was by banns and not licence). She could have been born anywhere!

This might be worth looking into ...

Thomas Mawson of Wilbarston mason = Phebe Hayes otp 1706 Dec 26 Rothwell

Per opening post - last child was born 1758 so unlikely to be that Phebe.  However - could be her parents marriage

True Lizdb, she could've! I've tried looking at the whole of the UK - no Phoebe Morson anywhere. Argh! At least Northamptonshire is a starting point. I heard there was a town near Cottingham that a lot of Morsons came from...

sugarbakers - thank you for that marriage! Maybe that's her parents.

I've tried looking at the whole of the UK -

Presumably just what is online! Rather than trawling through every parish record for every parish  :o :)

OK, maybe I should say every website I could think of ;) Ancestry, FindMyPast, TheGenealogist, FreeReg, FamilySearch... and I bought Alan Clarke's Northamptonshire birth and baptism index for 1700-1750 as well!

Agreed, but if you look at the Northants Baptisms Index there are bpts ...

John Mauson s/o blank 1707
Sarah Mauson d/o blank 1712
Thomas Mauson s/o Thomas 1722
Hannah Mauson d/o Thomas 1724

... all at Wilbarston.

Just wondering about that gap of ten years ... Wilbarston had an Independent Chapel built 1706, problem is that the records at TNA and NRO begin 1790, nothing earlier.

Hmm, interesting there's a ten year gap there. Just searching Wilbarston parish registers on Google - this website (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maureenbryson/id76.htm) seems to say that BT's 1712-1719 are missing.

Thank you for looking at the baptisms! Shame they don't have earlier at the NRO.

Yes, that could be the very simple answer - the records are lost.

The SoG National Index of Parish Registers (1991) shows that the original regs are only available from 1746 and the BTs, as you say, are missing 1712-1719.

Damn. Do I presume these are my people then? :( And she was born in that gap. Going by UK naming conventions, Thomas and Phoebe are John and Phoebe's first children (John W had married & had children before).

Noticed on Ancestry some of these go by 'Manson'. Phoebe 'Manson' dies in 1733. Also a William Morson from Wilbarston marries Mary Hawkins in Tilton on the Hill in 1758. I wonder if he's another child of Thomas and Phoebe. Seems these Morsons didn't mind travelling for marriage!

Thank you so much for all your help in locating all these Morsons for me :)

Just to correct my error in #9, third bpt should read
William Mauson s/o Thomas 1722
