Does anyone know if there was a home (or similar) for unmarried mothers in Nantwich, or close by, in the early 1900s? The date I'm looking at was early-mid WWI so I'm not sure if that would have had an impact or not. She did keep the baby and married a different man in the early 1930s and had two more children that I know of. Haven't seen a baptism record pop up either.
I know I'll prob need to order a birth certificate, but that will have to wait til January pay day whilst its Christmas ;D
Any help local knowledge would be appreciated. Googling hasn't brought anything up as yet....

I've read the Nantwich Workhouse post and had a look on the Family Search site and can't see baby, not 100% certain on mother's first name without the birth cert, but think she was called Edith and can't find any records for her either.

Could you post her surname, and that of the man she married, so we can also look?

Are you working from the registration district for the childs birth? If so - here are all the areas covered by that RD

Until you have more information as to exactly where the child was born (ie) the birth cert - it would be sheer guesswork

Baby's birth - 31st Jan 1917.
Name Vera J Johnson
Event Type Birth Registration
Registration Quarter Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration Year 1917
Registration District Nantwich
County Cheshire
Event Place Nantwich, Cheshire, England
Mother's Maiden Name (not available before 1911 Q3) Johnson
The J was for Joan. Not certain about the man her mother married. There were connections with Sound Manor in Nantwich and Market Drayton. Joan got married during WWII, which was registered in Crewe to George Albert Williams. There were Lycetts but I'm not sure if they were on Joan or George's side of the family.

According to CheshireBMD, the 1917 birth was in the registration sub district of Wrenbury, so not in Nantwich itself.
Having said that, the sub district itself was quite big at this time - see http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/subdists.php (http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/subdists.php)

Thanks Adrian, Audlem rings bells. :)
I've edited my previous post. I'm not sure if the Lycetts fit in on the Williams or Johnson side now. I guess I'll have to wait to order the certificate. I'm not very patient. I've always left this bit of the tree as I don't know very much about it.

The birth cert will show the address at which the baby was born which may not necessarily have been a mother and baby home

I know, I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was one. I will order the cert in the new year.

Not sure how long the site has been around - not that long I suspect, but http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/list/Cheshire.shtml (http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/list/Cheshire.shtml) contains a list of Children's Homes, etc., compiled by Peter Higginbotham of Workhouses fame.

The Nantwich Workhouse is a definite possibility. I have an unmarried mother on my tree who turned up in the Northwich Workhouse. Try http://www.geocities.ws/fountalnpen/index-2.html not sure how well this site works now, worth a try.
