Title: Place names in Italy please?
Post by: Rosinish on Wednesday 21 December 16 23:12 GMT (UK)
Hi Folks,

Can anyone tell me what the 2 place names in Italy are on this list please?

I have expanded the image for letter comparison.

1st is 6th line from bottom far right which looks like Candlemora?

2nd is bottom far right beginning with 'D' & ending with 'a'?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Annie

Wow Carol, thanks, that was quick  :o

Do you know if they are in the same region or in close proximity?

Not asked 'Go ogle' yet.

I've tried to ignore your interpretation Annie.  ;)
C_ _ tle moro, or movo or it may be an e at the end.

Other place name:
(may be hyphenated or in two parts)
Di Vi (or e) d (or l) fiana
Di Vidfiana / Di Vilfiana?

I know my suggested f is not the same as the f elsewhere on the page, but some letters are formed differently.

I haven't checked google yet to see of the second one exists.  :)

Di Verbania in Piemonte ?
jcmac

That looks promising, and similar to my interpretation of the letters.

We also need to keep in mind that the spellings of these place names are an interpretation by a Scottish man of something said by an Italian speaker, so differences are likely.

I'm trying to imagine the names being said in a broken English accent i.e. it could be either?

I have never been to Italy so I will enjoy my 'google' tour  ;)

I see the first one as Castlenuovo - so maybe Castelnuovo?

Thanks everyone,

I was having trouble myself deciphering & thought it best to leave it to others & I can now find out if those areas are close in proximity.

My next task will be the surnames of which there are 5 to find out if they're closely acquainted?

As an aside, I note "Ice Cream" and "Largs" mentioned.  May I enquire if these folk were connected with the famous ice-cream parlour of "Nardini's" situated in Largs, Ayrshire, which still trades to this day?

Not that has been determined so far, but you never know. Do you know whereabouts in Italy the Nardini family came from?*

* Tuscany I believe

Yes, that is correct. Pietro Nardini, the founder, arrived in Scotland from Tuscany, in 1890, see

Actress Daniela Nardini is his grand-daughter.

I had to google her, but yes, I've seen her in a number of TV shows.  :)

It is likely that the families knew of each other, but don't know if it extended beyond that. :)

Hello I have a link with a Nardini family from Castelnuovo in Italy (I think) I'm not too sure if it's the same as you but I see in your places of interest you have Haverfordwest I too have Haverfordwest also Cardiff . My Nardini's are Maria Rosa, Luigi, and Carola Nardini. Maria Rosa married a Nicola Esposti in 1895 They sold Ice cream in Cardiff. Could this be the same family do you think?

I actually missed the original enquiry about the surname Nardini to which I apologise.

From memory (as I can't now remember who I was trying to help at the time) but I don't recall the surname Nardini being on that census record.
