I have a record of Edward Jocelyn Baumgartner in a 1889 land sale document. I found a birth in 1815 in Godmanchester. In 1841 an Edward Baumgartner (1816) is living in Middle Temple in the Strand. and in 1841 he was living in Milton Cambridge. He married in Aug 1851, age given as 21, to Catherine Taylor, but then not a sign of him.
Can anyone see a record of him after 1851?

There is a tree on Ancestry with him, even with a photo! Says he remarried to a Sarah in 1860 , and he died in 1899. Lots more
No idea if it is accurate, of course, but may be worth contacting the owner to see what records he has taken his info from and if it all ties up or not,

So far so good

Some information on his later-life. He is mentioned the English will of the Hon. Elizabeth Lysaght which was proved by EJB of Middle Temple City of London AND GIBRALTAR . Dated 3 Oct. 1872. His occ. is Barrister and Registrar of Supreme Court of Gibraltar.

Several mentions in newspapers suggest he was appointed in some capacity in Gibraltar around 1867.

He died 1899 in Gibraltar. Details of him on ancestry.com but that is a proprietary site so cannot give too much information. Not Gibraltar, Eastern Cape as on ancestry. I am linked into but not related to EJB through his younger brother Henry A. Baumgartner, who was vicar of High Connisciffe, County Durham at the time of his (HAB) marriage to a local County Durham girl. Parents of HAB and EJB are John Thomas Baumgartner/Phillipa Knight.

Thank you for that. I have just re read the document and found that what I assumed to be "Baumgartner of Godmanchester" could easily be "Baumgartner of Gibraltar"
Typo. I meant 1851 at Milton. I have now found Catherine Baumgartner buried Histon 1854 age 25. Also Catherine Taylor born Histon Dec 1828.

Here is Edward Jocelyn Baumgartner freely available on the Internet.

I do not see any relationship to Cambridgeshire.

Thank you for the link. His mother was Phillippa Knight, daughter of Samuel Knight, of Milton Manor, near Cambridge. The Baumgartners inherited Milton Manor when Samuel Knight died in 1835 and Edward was recorded there in the 1851 census.
Interesting family.

Found the 1891 Census of Gibraltar. The census has the widower Edward Jocelyn Baumgartner living with the following children. EJB had two wives Catherine Taylor and then Sarah Woodland. I am assuming that the following children are from the Woodland marriage. 14 Upper Cumberland Road, Gibraltar is the residence of the family in 1891 plus my additional comments.
Edward Jocelyn Baumgartner abt 1816, England
Charles Baumgartner abt 1860, England
Constance M. Baumgartner abt 1866, England
Phillipa Baumgartner abt 1867, England (later Mrs Charles Henry S, Vores then widowed 2nd. marriiage Mrs Arthur D'Arcy Gordon Bannerman
Emily Baumgartner abt 1877, Gibraltar (later Mrs Edwin Christian Corbyn). She seems to be the last of this generation, she died West Folkstone, Kent, 21 March 1967
Florence Baumgartner abt 1878, Gibraltar.
Where John S. J. Edward Baumgartner comes in I do not know. As previously posted he married Inez, now with a marriage date, place, 18 Dec 1902, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
EJB daughter Charlotte F. Baumgartner married Herbert Fitzgerald, Feb 1885, Holy Trinity, Gibraltar.

"Where John S. J. Edward Baumgartner comes in I do not know. As previously posted he married Inez"
This Baumgartner changed his surname to Percy during World War One. Probably born in Gibraltar 9 March 1871.

London Gazette (on line)
As late as Nov 1916 the London Gazette was referring to "J S J Baumgartner, D.S.O" - this time on temporary promotion to Brigadier General.
The same publication also has an item in September 1915 about an Algernon Percy Baumgartner or Percy Algernon Baumgartner renouncing the Baumgartner surname.
NOTE - just found reference to "John Percy Baumgartner" and the Albanian link - pl ignore above.

Here is Allister Percy, formerly Baumgartner. His mother Inez is called "Lady" in the article. Father is Major General Sir Jocelyn Percy KBE, CB, CMG, DSO. (actually formerly Baumgartmer).

Edward Joscelyn (for some reason not Jocelyn) Baumgartner is my great great grandfather. If I can help? I am particularly interested in why his wife Sarah died in Gloucestershire having been in Gibraltar the year before (when my gt g/mother Charlotte - her daughter - was married).
