Title: Sarah Ann Roberts / Sines / Nicholls / Privett 1877-
Post by: ln4266 on Thursday 22 December 16 21:35 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I wonder if any of you may be able to help with any info regarding Sarah Ann Roberts, born in Kingston 1877. As I have posted before, I am trying to trace the origins of my Great-grandfather Harold John Nicholls b 1902 ( born in Wimbledon to Sarah Anne Nicholls, fostered by the Pamplin family in 1911). I recently turned  up a baptism record, recording the baptism of "Henry Herbert Nicholls and Agnes Annie Nicholls, illegitimate children of Henry Nicholls and Sarah Sines" in 1906, New Malden. Interestingly, both children are entered on the same row, and no address is given. I have also noticed that the entry is numbered incorrectly (804), the same as the entry above. Is it usual to enter 2 children on the same row, with no address? I have tracked Sarah Sines in 1911, with children, living in New Malden. She gives her status as widowed, living with brothers ( surnames Roberts) . She also states that she has 6 living children, but I can only find 5. I have found her marriage to a George Sines in 1895.

I am wondering where she was living in 1901, as I can't find her, and also what happened to George?  The census entry for 1901 George Sines in Wales doesn't seem to match.

Any ideas?

Thanks, for that one. Its just what she was up prior to those years that would be useful to know. Also wondering who Harry Nicholls ( father of 2 of her children) was. I can't seem to find any records that tally.

Wow! Thanks for your research there!

Can I ask how you found Agnes's birth certificate? Is it available on line?

I will have a look and see if the electoral registers for that address throw anything up.

I have found a link to the marriage between a Sarah Anne Roberts and George Sines in 1895, but haven't been able to find an image of it. I'm not sure if all Surrey certificates are online yet.

Possible marriage for a George Sines in Epsom 1911 to either a Susie Glasson or Florence Light?

I've noticed that in 1911, she was living next door to Mr. Privett, who she later married. Still can't find her and children in 1901 though.

I've found a baptism for an Elsie Louise and parents Florence Light (crossed out Light) and George Sines, so that appears to tie those two together. Thanks for the marriage tip!

Sarah Ann Roberts/Sines/Nicholls/Privett was my great grandmother via her son Henry Herbert Nicholls Sines.  Clearly she led a complex and difficult life. I can reveal that one of the children (An elder brother of Henry Herbert, was sent to Canada as a Banardos child, which may explain a missing sibling mentioned in a listing here.  The story goes that my Grandad never knew he was a Nicholls (he assumed he was Sines). It wasn't until he joined the navy that his full name was revealed via his birth records. Sarah had neglected to tell him. Whomever Mr Nicholls was, we feel he was an important person to Sarah as my Grandad seemed to be a favourite.  We know that  another member of the family knew more but refused to talk about it. The only clue we have is that Mr Nicholls was murdered.
It appears that my Grandad witnessed Agnes's marriage so I wouldn't take the Fathers name on the certificate as anything other than kindness in giving her a Father on her special day. Goodness knows they deserved it.
I think also Agnes may have changed her name to Nancy.
Would dearly love to discover who Mr Nicholls was. It is always the one you know so little about that is the most interesting.
