Post by: neil16377 on Wednesday 28 December 16 08:44 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone. Wondering if anyone can help.
I have traced my family history back to the GEEN family in merthyr Tydfil.
Especially  Martha Ann GEEN my great x3 grandmother.
I know that her family owned a pub in merthyr..
I'd like to know i if the geen family are still in merthyr?
Or if anyone knows of anyone that could help..cheers neil

Thank you so much. Do you know if the family name still exsists in merthyr.?
I think! I have trace the geen,s to Germany..

Thanks Neil.
P.s  I noticed there was a lady called Gwyneth70 on these forums that was also related to Martha a Geen, I have sent her a pm. Hope I get a response!

Welcome to Rootschat neil16377

You said;

If I have the right 1861 Census for John Geen his Father was born in Devon

1861 Census
Merthyr-Tydfil, Glamorgan
George Geen, 41, Iron Miner, born Landkey, Devon
Martha Geen, 24
JOHN Geen, 7****
George Geen, 5
Ann Geen, 9mths
Everyone except George is born Merthyr Tydfil

Looks to me that Martha is a second Wife for George so not Johns Mother.

GRO Index for his Birth has Mothers maiden name as SANDERS****;
GEEN, JOHN
GRO Reference: 1853  S Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL  Volume 11A  Page 229

And Ann age 9mths from Census;
GEEN, ANN, Mothers mn GRIFFITHS*****
GRO Reference: 1860  S Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL  Volume 11A  Page 29

John GEEN, 2nd Marriage is on FreeBMD Reg March 1859, George GEEN/Martha GRIFFITHS on same page

1st Marriage FreeBMD 1852, South Molton (Devon), Martha SANDERS on same page

Death Reg of Martha nee SANDERS
GEEN, MARTHA, age 35 ****
GRO Reference: 1857  D Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL  Volume 11A  Page 200

Trish :)

EDIT Marthas Burial is on FreeREG, Buried 18 Dec 1857

1851 Census George GEEN born c 1820 Landkey, Devon, Occp Drainer, is a unmarried Lodger in Llanblethian, Glamorgan, Wales.

May I ask how you have traced them back to Germany in the 1600's ?

Do you have George Geens Parents and Marriage Certs to confirm his Fathers name/occp?

Van Geen is also a Dutch surname :-\

But you really need to trace back generation by generation ;)
Don't fall into the trap of making assumptions.
Or, even worse, following ridiculous hints from Ancestry! ;D

Might be worth posting on the Old Merthyr website. There's not much traffic there but some well informed folk, plus lots of memories and photos.
