Wondering if anyone can help.. I have a George Steele marrying Emma East in 1871 in Bristol. George was the son of Hugh Steele and lived in Cardiff. I know these details are right. However I have just been left a hint on Ancestry which tells me that when George married Emma he was widowed. Does anyone else have any info on his previous marriage.
Thanks

The marriage to Emma should say if he was a widower
When in 1871 did they marry?
What was his status on 1871 census if he was married post census?
What year did the 'supposed' 1st wife die?
Was she named?
When/where were they 'supposedly' married?
What was his occupation on each of those marriages?
May be 2 people of the same name?

Hi Cas
Thanks for confirming some of details I knew and gave me some more inf that I didn't know. I had the details of the wedding but was surprised that he was widowed. Are you saying that he was married to Bowen before and that all his children were hers?
Thanks

Hi Cas
My great grandmother was Frances Elizabeth Jane Steele born 1874 in Cardiff... I think that some of George's siblings had similar names to his children

Hi
No. All the children on census in 1881 are Emma's.
If you check the dates the 2 children he had with Sarah died. Sarah died in 1871 so cannot be the mother of those in 1881 as they are two young. Check the new index on GRO for Mothers maiden name after 2nd marriage, to confirm it is East.
Yes he renamed the first two very similar names.

Cas is saying that he married Sarah Bowen 10/7/1862 Swansea, Glamorgan and had 2 children:
Robert Hugh born 1864 - died Mar.qtr.1870 Cardiff
Frances Elizabeth born 1869 - died Dec.qtr.1869 Cardiff
Wife Sarah died Jun.qtr.1871 Cardiff - must have been shortly after the 1871 census as she was still alive then.
He remarried that same year - 22 Nov. - and had 4 children with 2nd wife Emma:
Robert William b.Dec.qtr.1872
Frances Elizabeth J. b.June qtr.1874
Sarah Anne b.Mar.qtr. 1876 - died Mar.qtr.1878
Ada Hannah b.Sept.qtr.1877

Good work Caz!
Think the re-naming of deceased children is very significant!
Gill, have you found out who George's mother is?
Annie

Hi Annie
Yes have information about George mother. Believe George's father Hugh's father was also named Hugh but other than one working with Hay and one working with On the canal have not found out where they are from etc. Any help would be gratefully received. George's grandfather was I believe The landlord of the Cow and Snuffers in Llandaff Yard and was called Evan Llewelyn. Father of Jane. There is a plaque mentioning Jane in Llandaff Cathedral. Again there may be someone out there who is related by birth or have more information.
Thank you all for your help......there are some clever people out there..
