Hello and welcome :)
Sorry this is mostly questions.
Where do you have James as born Louth?
Do you have the marriage details for James and Jane? Thus would give you his father's name.
I have seen a published tree which has Jane's name as Cashmore but I see it as 'Brithwhite'. :-\
Yes, now I see Mary and James with mother Cashmore and George with mother Brithwhite or Brethwhite.
It does help if you give references or as much info as you have.

Looks like the family in 1901- or at least Jane & 2 sons-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9LN-FNM
1891 census shows Jane & children all born England-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7QWG-FW2
As the marriage was likely in England you need to see that certificate to see the name and occupation of James' father before trying to trace his Irish origins.

Yes I have those censuses too plus baptisms for those children (with a different mother's name for George) but can't find the couple in 1881 or a marriage yet. :-\

Liverpool Catholic records. If you need them I can transcribe them.
Where do you get Louth from?
Do you have Jane in earlier censuses?
-
Hi
It is a story that came down the family, my brother remembers grandfather george halligan telling him he sailed into liverpool as a young boy. he also told him the family were from drogheda louth

Is that your George though - he was born in Liverpool.
Did you see the baptisms?

Hi
Sorry about this where do i find the baptism records you refer to?

They are on Ancestry.
The names are in Latin so don't show up in a general search. You can access them through the catalogue by searching for Liverpool Catholic baptisms.
Is that your tree which is published with Elizabeth Jane Cashmore as the children's mother?

Hi
Yes,

You already have the baptisms then.
Have you ever checked the marriage of Jane Cashmore and James Allen in 1881. They are on the census for that year but I can't see them later.
I wondered if Allen was a substitute for Halligan for some reason.
The marriage isn't online - just a transcript which states her father is George Traynor :-\

Hi Mal,
I don't want to give you information you already have. Not that there is much, is there? I have searched for Jane and James with no real result like you.
You already had the baptisms on your tree so you know about the discrepancy with mother's maiden name.
Mary's baptism shows an address in Juno Street in 1881 but the family are not there in the census that year.
The other baptisms don't have an address but Sarah Halligan is the Godmother on both those. I wonder if we could find her?
Do you have any birth certificates for the children to compare Jane's name, James' occupation and any addresses which could help?
Regards and Happy New Year

I have amended my previous message - it sounded a bit dismissive :-\ sorry.

Hi
the 1891 census has them living in 17 Dalton St.the 1901 8 Botanic st.the 1911 is maynard st Mary has now married thomas arthur allen. George Halligan and Caroline Brown marriage cert has James Halligan occupation as stone mason, but does not say that he is deceased, the 1901 census shows Jane Halligan as a widow. i will send for the birth cert of the children tomorrow.

Hi
I have looked at the baptismal records for the halligans james, mary, george.
they all have a witness sarah halligan. i have found a sarah and james halligan in the 1851 census.
do you think that this could be my great granddad?
Regards
Mal

I think it would be too difficult to tell.
You would need to find a Sarah Halligan 1871/1881/1891
She could be a sister or sister in law. She might even be his mother but usually a grandparent would not be a godparent.
It would be interesting to check George's birth certificate and another sibling because of the different mother's names.
James is never found with Jane is he?
It is strange that Jane Cashmore cannot be found either other than the marriage to James Allen. This is from memory though so could be wrong.
