Title: Parish Records for Essington area 1790s
Post by: cristeen on Wednesday 04 January 17 13:07 GMT (UK)
I am looking for any parish records relating to Thomas Wilks born circa 1795 Essington.
All the usual sites have very few contenders for this man and his parents. There may also be a marriage locally and subsequent burial of said wife. (Thomas married 1816 in Liverpool as a widower)
I have downloaded some transcriptions from the Wolverhampton History website, with no real contenders. Being unfamiliar with the area doesn't make the search any easier
If it's of any help Thomas named his children Thomas, Thomas Sefton, Hannah Phillips (?), Samuel James, Joseph Mark, James MArk, Agnes, John Matthew, Richard Barker and finally Richard Barker Jackson. The final child's second forename is his mother's maiden name.
Any possibilities for Thomas, his parents, siblings or first wife welcomed
Thanks, Christine  :)

He was quite young when he married for 2nd time...are you getting his birthplace from census
records?

You will need to consult the parish registers for Bushbury - Essington wasn't a parish in it's own rights until 1934.  Bushbury (1662 onwards at Staffordshire Archives - BTs at Lichfield) only has records from 1788 on-line - no sign of Thomas Wilks (variable spelling).

Thank you for the replies

Yes, sorry Jackie I should have typed Thomas' birth year as 1785, which gives him enough time to have been widowed by 1816 :) I got the place and year from the 1851 census when he is a coal dealer living in Birkenhead

Jackie I had come across that one and am thinking this is my best bet at the moment. There was a Hannah Philips Wilks buried in Ulverston in November 1823 aged 2, the abode listed is Sandside which consists of about four houses and Thomas was living there in January 1824 when Samuel James was baptised. I can't find a baptism for Hannah Philips Wilks but her birth would have been around the time Thomas went bankrupt in Liverpool so maybe couldn't afford a baptism (?) or too busy organising a move to Ulverston
I will have to search for a marriage for Matthew Wilks and Hannah
It would make sense for him to christen his first daughter after his mother.

Thanks BumbleB, looks like I will struggle to find a baptism or parents marriage online :(

It's so close to bloxwich, it's more like between 1 and 2 miles. I've had relatives in other areas further away who have used bloxwich so it's good possibility.

Great, so I found a marriage on freereg
Matthew Wilks and Hannah Barber, 8th Sep 1782, St Matthew Walsall
Widower & widow of this parish

Thomas Barber married Hannah Philips 15 Feb 1770 St Matthew Walsall, three children baptised at St Matthews, William 9 Mar 1771, Ann 29 Sep 1773 and Samuel 2 Jan 1777
Also at St Matthews a burial Thomas Barber 28 Feb 1777

Bearing in mind I think Thomas's first daughter was Hannah Philips Wilks I reckon this might be the family. Thomas also named a son Samuel and a later son had the middle name of Matthew.
Walsall isn't too far away from Bloxwich and Essington
Any thoughts people?
