Title: Baptism notations for John Keenan April 12,1835
Post by: charlesmkeenan1 on Thursday 05 January 17 22:16 GMT (UK)
Hello all:
The following information is from:
The Registry of Catholic Baptisms in the Parishs of Ardkeen and Inishargy , &c.
April 12 (1835 noted previous page) Name of Children: John Keenan, Name of Parent: Felix Keenan, Sponsors; Robert McShane, Lucinda Dorrian; Celebrant: WL

My questions:
- There is space for both parents names but only the father's name is listed. Is this common practice (both names are listed on many others on this same page) or possibly the reflection of a mixed religious marriage?
- Are the sponsors considered the godparents? If so, wasn't this role considered primarily for family?
I have not found any McShane or Dorrian relatives in this Keenan tree although the mother's name is Sarah Jane McQuoid; b. 1814;IRL and one of John's siblings (Susannah) married Bernard Doran;b. 1834, IRL. Doran may be a variation on Dorrian.
- The Celebrant is listed as WL. Does anyone know who this may be?

Thanks in advance.
Chuck

It looks like the priest forgot to make a note of the mother's name.

Sponsors were Godparents, often from the near and wide circle of family but not necessarily.

I'll have a look for the priest name, it's often at the start of the book.

thanks all, mother was alive for many years later unless of course there was a previous mother that I was unaware of. Sarah McQuoid was the mother to the children after John per birth certificates in England where they immigrated.

Is anyone aware of any intermarriages with Keenan's and Dorrian's and McShane's? My friend, Bill Seeley, who is related to both Dorrian and McShane indicated the families were from the Ballycranbeg area.

Best regards from a chilly nite in Western NY

If you look again, the majority of other baptisms on this same page only have the father's name recorded, as is also the case on previous pages (the second column under 'Names of Parents' being more often used on these pages to record the address, not the mother's name). In this register, it is only from October 1853 that more consistent recording of the mother's name commences.

I don't know if I would describe it as 'common practice', but I have certainly encountered the convention of recording only the father's name on a number of occasions before now and I wouldn't read anything into it here.
