Hi,
This is a very long shot but I'm trying to do my family tree and I'm stuck at my Granddad!
He always told us his name was Patrick Joseph Casey. When I received his marriage certificate (Married Richmond, Yorkshire Aug 1953) it states his name was Kevin J Casey?
He rarely spoke of his past let alone his family, although my mother believes he always said he had a sister called Margaret whom he loved dearly.
His date of birth is 30.10.1930 (Or so he has told us) - He said he was born in County Longford, Ireland, and that he traveled over here in his teens.
I do have a photo of him in military clothing (I believe he was at Catterick Garrison, England for some time) but he was never in active service.
Can someone guide me as to where I even begin looking? I'm on Findmypast but I have not been able to find anything - searching for a Casey in Ireland is proving to be a nightmare :(
Any help is very much appreciated!

He may have come from Longford town or County Longford.
Co.Longford has 3 Registration Districts
Longford, Ballymahon and Granard.

I assume you have a father's name from the marriage but you won't have his mother's name, her maiden name is ideally what you need, to find his birth, it will of course be on the birth cert. It's a catch 22.
You do have a sister's name, so finding a Kevin or Patrick and Margaret in one of those districts with matching mother's maiden name will give a possibility.
It's a difficult search in the best of circumstances but more difficult in your case when you can't be sure of the 'facts'.
You need to hunt down any paper work at home for any clue, old letters, death notice kept from a newspaper and such like as well as formal stuff.

Father was a..... Rocket Engineer??? or what??

Hi - sorry for the vague post!
I left the certificate at work which I can access on Monday but I do now know he was in the R.A.M.C at Catterick Garrison. I think from the certificate it had him down as a L/Cpl but I can't be sure until I double check on Monday.
Unfortunately he died in 2012 and it only shows up to date information that we already knew (or thought we knew).
I can update more on Monday but thank you for all your suggestions so far :)

you'll need any tiny snippet you can get, even old photos that may be from Ireland.

Right - his marriage certificate states his father was called Thomas Casey and that his father's occupation was 'male nurse'.
His residence at the time of marriage is Catterick Military Hospital in Richmond.
They were married in the parish church of St Oswald Catterick Camp.
Married on 18th July 1953.
Where do I go from here ? ???

If this church is a catholic church he may have required a letter of freedom from his home parish to proved that he was not already married.
I would contact the church and ask them for the information that they have as many also recorded the mother's name; if they have a note of a letter of freedom it should state his date of baptism (which would normally be within a short period of his birth) and help locate the correct birth record for you to work from there
