Hi...I keep hitting brick walls trying to find any trace, apart from marriage of my great grandmother, Mary Ann Conner. I know she was born around 1872 in Dudley Collery, Durham, father Michael was a miner, she married George William Hall in Oct 1891 in Killingworth, Northumberland, had two children, Robert William and William, and died Sept 1907 in Whiburn. Despite trawling all sites, I cannot find her on either the 1881 or 1891 census nor can I find any trace of her birth. What am i doing wrong please?
-
That was supposed to be Whitburn in Northumberland, apologies for the typo!
-
I've found a possible on the 1881 census, but her father is down as a chemical labourer
-
Chemical labourer? When they married in 1891, he was a miner so its possible he could have changed? On where you're looking, is she down as born at Dudley Collery as thats whats on the 1901 census?

Hello,
This is the right area but Mary A's age is out :-\
1881 5087/64/63
Dudley Colliery
Michael Connor 42 yrs
Elizabeth Connor 38 yrs
Robert Connor 18 yrs
Mary A. Connor 15 yrs b Wolverhampton :-\
Thomas Connor 12 yrs
John Connor 8 yrs
Heywood
-
Of course, it could be wrong. The transcriptions may not be correct. Try different spellings of the name. Plus don't always be fooled by the place of birth, I'm guessing her husband would have completed the census (verbally) and he may have just said where he thought she was born - he may not have known. If it's in the same area then it could be the same woman.
-
In 1871 the same family that Heywood found appears to be in Weetslade which is where Dudley Colliery was situated.
cathy
-
Dudley Colliery is in Longbenton parish, Northumberland! ;D
"LONG BENTON parish comprises the townships of Killingworth, Long Benton, Walker, and Weetslade"
It contains extensive collieries, foundries, quarries, gunpowder-works, &c. - upwards of 1,300 persons are employed in the collieries alone.
-
Oh gosh....thank you all so much for all of this information....I've been going round and round in circles on this one so all of your help is so very much appreciated!!
-
In 1871 the same family that Heywood found appears to be in Weetslade which is where Dudley Colliery was situated.
cathy
Yes, I put Dudley Colliery rather than Weetslade to show that she seemed a good bet.
-
1891 4204/54/28
Shows Mary Connor 25 yrs born Dudley, Northumberland as a servant living in Newcastle.
-
GRO Index has Robert/Mary/Thomas Connor's Birth Reg's with Mothers mn as HUGHES
Ist 2 Reg Wolverhampton and Thomas in Tynemouth
Cant find a Marriage though!
1871 we have in Weetslade Parish, Dudley, Northumberland;
Michael Connor, 31, born Liverpool, Lancashire
Betsy Connor, 32,Oswestry, Shropshire
Robert Connor, 7,Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
Mary Ann Connor, 5,Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
Thomas Connor, 1, Backworth, Northumberland
1861 a Elizabeth Hughes born c 1839 Rugeley, Shropshire, is lodging in Birmingham, Warwickshire
-
Re your PM, yes it is hard to totally prove it is the right Mary Ann.
Fathers name is correct and occp from M/C.
Who ere the witnesses to the Marriage?
Mary Halls Death Reg has her age 38 in 1907, birth c 1869, nearer to the info we all found.
-
Also in 1871 the Connors are living in Dudley. Northumberland.
Civil Parish Weetslade.
As she would have been very young when they moved there and the Family seem to move about a lot, she may have been confused as to where she was born.
I can find only 1 Christening for a Child of Michael/Elizabeth and from FreeBMD it appears she died the same early 1874 age 0 (under 1 year).
ELIZABETHA Connor
christening:19 July 1877, St. John, Annitsford, Northumberland, England
residence: Annitsford, Northumberland, England
father: Michaelis Connor
mother: Elizabethae Annae Hughes Connor
-
Re your PM.
Its just easier for me to post info all together than in a PM.
1891 Census
Dudley, Northumberland
Michael CONNON**, 51, Head, Mar, Coal Miner, born Wolverhampton
Elizabeth Connon, 54, Wife, Mar, born Istrey England, Shropshire (Ostrey on image)
Thomas Connon, 23, Son, Unm, Coal Miner, born Buckworth
John Connon, 17, Son, Unm, Coal Miner, born Dudley
So Thomas age 23, Mary Anns Brother, may be thee Witness at Mary Anns Marriage!
1871 Thomas is born Backworth, 1891 Buckworth
Elizabeths place of birth matches 1881 Census
Looks like Michael is not sure where he was born.
Now it is possible Michael remarried, if so she was Elizabeth Baker as a Step Son is there with them.
1901 Census
8 Grieves Row,
Dudley, Weetslade, Northumberland
Michael Connor, 63, Head, Mar, Coal Miner, born Liverpool, Lancashire
Elizabeth Connor, 31, Wife, Mar, born Gosforth, Northumberland
John Baker, 9, Step Son**
Thomas Connor, 7, Son
Evaline A M Connor, 5, Daug
Dorothy Connor, 3, Daug
Robert Connor, 1, Son
John Scott, 34, Lodger
I cant post 1911 for copyright reasons, but Michael is still alive, Elizabeth/Michael have 3 more Children.
He is down as born c 1837 Wolverhampton.**
Same Children as 1901 + John Baker is there and 3 more Children.
Back soon to see if I can find a Death Reg for Elizabeth born Shropshire and re-marriage for Michael.
-
Death Reg June 1892
BETSY Connor, age 57, Tynemouth, 10b 171
Marriage Reg Dec 1892 (in Durham)
CONNOR Michael, Gateshead, 10a 1309
Elizabeth BAKER on same page
Now I was a bit worried that Michael had a Son Thomas age 23 in 1891 Census then another Thomas born c 1894 with possible 2nd Wife Elizabeth Baker.
I then found this Death Reg;
Sept 1892
THOMAS Connor, Castle W. ,10b 157, age 23***
-
Death Reg;
MICHAEL Connor, age 76
Sept 1913, Tynemouth, 10b 286
Michael is 74 in 1911
-
Maybe someone has access to this Marriage???
Marriage Reg Dec 1892 (in Durham)
CONNOR Michael, Gateshead, 10a 1309
Elizabeth BAKER on same page

Gosh Trish...what site are you finding all this info on....I've been searching for months!!!!
-
Using Anc. and FreeBMD, just free sites.
I couldnt find Michael in 1891 so just searched Michael Conn*, no date or place of birth, lived in Dudley, Northumberland.
Found them under Connon!
I have been on Rootchat since 2008 and was very inexperienced when I started searching my Tree. Lots of people on here were wonderful in helping me so now I like to give back.
Keeps the brain cells working also!
Very hot night here in Sydney, 30 degrees at 11.30 pm, so not sure how long my brain will keep working ;D
-
Re your PM;
Quote;
Hiya...witnesses were Thomas Connor (spelt with an o as opposed to an e although Michae'ls is quite clearly an e) and Jane Ann Hughes?
It is likely Jane Ann Hughes is related to Michaels 1st Wife (Sister/Mother?)
-
Its possible! Interestingly though, after Mary Ann's husband, William Hall died in 1900 leaving her with 2 young boys, one of which was my Grandfather, she didn't reach out to her own father but divided them between herself and the grandmother, Elizabeth Tinkler. You would have thought it would have been her own family, but obviously not!
Very jealous re the weather, we are shivering in the UK! And what a brilliant way to keep the grey cells going although doing this for my Dads side has I'm sure made a few of mine desert me!!! We always knew so little and now no ones here to answer our questions and despite the Halls being an endless source of frustration...they seem to be agricultural workers who moved around a lot, it is absolutely absorbing!!
-
Her Father was elderly with a lot of mouths to feed himself in 1900.
Maybe new Wife and Mary Ann didnt get on.
Now 'Im going to throw another spanner in the works.
The name may have been CONNELL or transcribed as.
Marriage FreeBMD

Notes;
Grooms age is full; Grooms father deceased***; Brides age is full; Brides father deceased***
Elizabeth CONNOR** witnesses the Marriage of ROBERT Hughes , Father THOMAS (deceased) to Mary Ann TAYLOR, same Church 25 Oct 1858
So a few months later ;D
So 1861 living in Wolverhampton Reg District
The GRO has a new website which you have to register but searching is free.
So we have;
Birth Reg;
CONNOR, JOHN, Mothers mn HUGHES
GRO Reference: 1861 M Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON Volume 06B Page 440
So somewhere between 1861 Census and 1881 Census John must have died.
Possible one for a JOHN Connor on GRO Death Index age 2 years Reg Newcastle upon Tyne 1863

Just posting this quickly before I lose it, will explain later
1851 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire;

Martha Lloyd, 74
All born Oswestry, Shropshire
Marriages Sep 1843
HUGHES Jane, Oswestry 18 157
PIERCE Thomas Oswestry 18 157
They married one another as only 2 names on page
-
Eek!! I'm lost!!! :(
-
Ok, I couldnt find a Hughes/Connor Marriage so used soundex option on FreeBMD,
Looked earlier than first Child Richard c 1864.
Only one I could find was under CONNELL, luckily FreeREG had a transcription of it.
It had Fathers names, both deceased.
Ok, so in 1861 Michael/Elizabeth are under Connell, Son John born c 1861 (1mth old)
His Birth is reg as John CONNOR ( New GRO Index), Mother HUGHES
His Death appears to be reg as John CONNOR age 2 on GRO Index
The 1851 I posted looks to bed Elizabeth and Robert (from Marriages, both have Father THOMAS Hughes, deceased)
I will research this more but their Mother from 1851 Census has remarried to Thomas PEARCE (Pierce on FreeBMD Marriage Reg).
Have a look at it all and I'll be back tomorrow :)
-
Did you look over it all Nip122?
-
Hi Trish.....yes I have, thank you so much......i think that there was just so much information that I was struggling to keep up!! Now I've had a chance to look through it, it does all make sense, thank you!! I'm still in awe at the speed at which you can find things though!! :)
-
Yes it was a lot to take in. I was a novice once too!
Any other questions in the future just reply on this query.
All the best,
Trish :)
