Title: Robert John Johnston
Post by: lil growler on Friday 06 January 17 22:38 GMT (UK)
Hi there

I'm helping an elderly lady with her ancestors. Her Great Grandfather Robert John Johnston was b abt 1851 in Tasmania and came to NZ with his brother Charles. Robert married Elizabeth Sophia Armer 26 Mar 1884. I need some help looking for Roberts parents please.  I have come across parents that included Mary Riley as a mother. The funeral directors for Robert no longer exist, he died 5 Nov 1939 in Hamilton and I haven't found any other information that directs me to his birth details. I'd appreciate your help thanks.

I have snippets for a Charles Johnston and apparently he was a bit notorious, but not thing that can lead to his parents.

I'm using the library internet at present and it may take a few days for me to reply.

Regards

lil

Buy his death printout - depending on who the informant was, it should have his parents' details.

Or - the marriage printout may be a better bet.

Added - you can search Tasmanian records here:

The marriage certificate would also have his parents :)

Papers Past has some information, including a golden wedding announcement in the New Zealand Herald of 26th March 1934 , for Robert John JOHNSTON, son of the late Robert and Mary, and Elizabeth Sophia. The Herald for the following day has a useful biography for Robert John.

This could be the sad story of Sarah Elizabeth above (called Sarah Emily in the story)

Goodness, what a story, with so many sad aspects.  Is the result of the inquest reported anywhere?

Certainly seems possible that this is Sarah.

The age of the father as given in this newspaper article is ten years older than the age given in the marriage of Robert JOHNSTON and Mary RILEY - however there's plenty of scope for misreporting or, indeed, for Robert to have lowered his age for a marriage to a woman at least 10 years younger. Sarah's age and birthplace fit well.

You say that the son Robert went to NZ with his brother Charles, however it's obvious from the Papers Past, Golden Wedding information that his father and presumably also his mother and siblings.

The report of the inquest on Sarah is held in the archives in Wellington. It is under her married name - CLEAVER.

There is a newspaper report of the inquest here:

Thanks Johnf04 - interesting to see that the verdict was an illness rather than the poisoning as supposed earlier and reported somewhat luridly in the newspaper.

Good find CoL  :)

Hi John Jud Cupo

Thank you for your help and the information you have searched and provided, I will look over the information when I get home.  I spoke with the elderly lady I am helping and she was so pleased to hear who her great grandfather and grandmother are and I have given her a copy of the news articles, which she is delighted with, she is happy :)  And I found some additional information on the family aswell on Papers past. My friend is 89 years old and the information she has provided on her family past her grandparents is sketchy. After some discussion, it is believed Mary was a bartender/barmaid in Laucheston. I really appreciate your help. I'm about to do some searching for Robert in Mary in Tasmania.

I have contacted the Tasmania Police Museum. Hopefully they can provide me with some information on Robert SNR. I am also looking at the Ireland connection.
