I have located a marriage via the Irish Catholic Parish Registers - marriage date April 1831, it just says marriage place was Portlaw, Waterford. I have no idea at all about Portlaw would anyone be able to point me in the direction of which church this may have been. Thank you.

Portlaw is a parish not just one church.
Where did you find the marriage?
If not on the NLI site, have a look here http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1117 and you will see how large the parish is.
or did you know it was Portlaw parish and that particular record has Portlaw written on it indicating the husband was from Portlaw town?

Thank you for your reply,
its Irish Catholic Parish Registers via Ancestry, now I have seen link you mention, but I am not in Ireland and as this is now a new search direction for me I am unsure how to access that.
This I have just says marriage place Portlaw Waterford, Diocese Waterford and Lismore .

Just click on the Link.
The parish records on Ancestry are a transcript of the free images on the NLI site, which can't be searched by name.
You have to find the set of images your year is in, open that and you can search by type of record and year and month. But you have to find the marriage by scrolling through the page(s)

Today there are two churchs, St.Patricks Portlaw and St.Nicholas Ballyduff.

The first names are in Latin.
John Kirby Bridget Flangan
Arthur Flangan, possibly Cath Kirby. Michael(abbreviated) O Rourke (Priest, he's on a few of them).
The Con at the start abbreviated Latin for married.
The word after Bridget Flangan seems to be most of them, think it could be abbreviated Latin for witnesses

Thank you so much for your help. I' ve got it as Arthur and Catherine too now, the other paper I have I now see its probably Arthurus (Latin) or similar (and Catherina). I would never have got the priest though thank you. Can I also ask you, do you know this - am I right in what I have now read that this is St Nicholas Church built circa 1822 and not St Patricks which was built circa 1858 or was there an earlier church on the site of st Patricks. I cannot see anything on the link but I could be missing where it is.

It depends where they were from Portlaw or Ballyduff the marriage has no address.
The OSI mapviewer has a RC Church in Porlaw on the 6" 1829-41 map

You are making an assumption, that they were married in church. Not necessarily a good assumption at that date.

It is "Test", a contraction of 'Testis" or "Testes", the Latin for witness/witnesses.
