Title: HENDRY and WYLIE families of Glasgow
Post by: James18 on Sunday 08 January 17 15:49 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone from the Glasgow area would perhaps remember any of my HENDRY and WYLIE relatives. I have been piecing together a family tree over the past few years and have managed to get in contact with a number of relatives, but I am very much interested in the social history as well as the personal.

These families lived primarily in Springburn and Cathcart, and perhaps the most well-known member would be Dr. James Brown HENDRY (1893 - 1966), who was physician and homeopath. He and his wife Sarah Minnie REA (1893 - 1985) ran a hotel in Glasgow... the King's or Queen's Hotel, I believe. I am not 100% of the name, but perhaps people familiar with the area will know. They had a son named Raymond - also a doctor - and the family were long-standing Plymouth Brethren.

James appears as the signatory on several of his relatives' death certificates, including his nephews Andrew WYLIE (1906 - 1945) and Samuel WYLIE (1908 - 1942).

I am wondering if any older users from the Glasgow area may remember James or any of his family, as I believe one or two of them were quite prominent figures. If you have any vague recollection of people by the name of Hendry or Wylie who were Plymouth Brethren then are very likely to be from these families. The older generations were Irish but moved to Glasgow in about 1900, as was fairly common at the time.

Thanks.

Hi, Dr Raymond Brown-Hendry was my doctor for over 20 years, I think he retired around 1997. I used to attend his consulting room in Queens Park Glasgow. I visited him a couple of times at his home.   He was a charming and interesting man, loved golf, sports cars and art.  Sadly he passed in 2013, nine years after his wife Jessie.  A lovely couple.

Hope this helps in your search

Kind regards Kitty

Hi Kitty,

Thanks for your reply, and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Interesting that you knew Raymond, though I suppose many did. My aunt always kept in touch with that side of the family and visited Raymond and Jessie many times over the years, including - I believe - several times during Raymond's final illness.

I managed to speak to Raymond's son on the phone last year, and he told me a number of family anecdotes and gave me a bit of background info on the family. I have never met any of them, although my grandmother (who died when I was ten) was Raymond's cousin.

I'd be keen to see a photograph of the hotel; I wonder if one exists on an old Glasgow photo archive website somewhere?

Thanks again, Kitty.

There is a brief biography on him here www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0007078566800145?via%3Dihub (just click on the pdf link). You may have this already though.

Post Office Directory listing from 1940-1 for Hotels. Can't see any reference to King's/Queen's Hotel in Glasgow at that time unfortunately

Hotels - https://archive.org/stream/postofficeann194041glas#page/1612/mode/2up/search/hotels
Boarding Houses - https://archive.org/stream/postofficeann194041glas#page/1450/mode/2up/search/hotels
Plenty of pubs with King or Queen in the name...not surprisingly! www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk/index.html

Maybe a search of his will would give clues...

Given that Raymond had links to Queen's Park area could it be the Queen's Park Hotel?

There is a Queens Park Hotel (located at 10 Balvicar Drive, Glasgow) today but it doesn't appear to be listed in the 1940-44 directories under that name (or variant) but there is a hotel at that location in the 1940's map of the area

I have just rechecked the 1941 directory - the Hotel itself is not listed but there is an entry for an Architect who gives his address as the Queens Park Hotel 10 Balvicar Drive Glasgow.

If you check Google for the Hotel there are current photographs of the interior and one exterior shot which probably hasn't changed that much.

Yes, I have that obituary, but thanks for suggesting it.

And yes, it was the Queen's Park Hotel. My mother vaguely remembers Jim and Minnie as a child.

Sadly the Queen's Park Hotel is now more of a homeless hostel than a hotel.

Hi, I have some information regarding Dr James Hendry. He was my great Uncle. Would like to hear what our connection is.
