Title: Dancey Burial 1882
Post by: Mansl on Sunday 08 January 17 16:29 GMT (UK)
There is a death Dec qtr 1882 Gloucester 6a 192.  Alice Dancey aged 36.

I wonder if there is a burial anywhere for this because I am wondering if this should be Mary Ann and not Alice and James their husband got the names mixed up when he registered the death.

Mary Ann and James's last child Lily Mabel birth was registered June 1882 and James married Alice in December 1883 as a widower.

I can't find a death in Gloucester for Mary Ann Dancey(Hayes) born C1845 Gloucester between June 1882 and the marriage in December 1883.

If he was registering his wife's death between April - June 1882 - how likely is it he would give the name of a woman he only married 18 months later and may possibly not even have known at the time of his wife's death??

Have you looked for an Alice Dancey on the 1881 census?

Hi Alan

I can't see a burial for either an Alice or Mary Ann in Gloucestershire records. In light of Mr Danceys character found in later records - maybe Mary Ann hadn't died.

Just a thought.

I Haven't looked for a Alice Dancey in 1881.

You could be right maybe she remarried she was only in her thirties.

This is the situation.

James Dancey married Mary Ann Hayes 6/1/1867 Birmingham

As a widower he married Alice Haines 3/12/1883 Gloucester

As a bachelor he married Priscilla Wood 12/8/1885 Gloucester.

31/10/1885 he was imprisoned at Gloucester for Bigamy.

In 1891 he was living with Alice in Birmingham

In 1901 he was back living with Priscilla and Alice's daughter Beatrice and daughters born 1898 and 1900 maiden name Woods. In Birmingham

No sign of Alice after 1891.

I think the Bigamy applies to him marrying Priscilla because when he died 1929 he left his money to a Priscilla Wood. So his marriage to her was void.Although when she died 1945 she was called Priscilla Dancey.

Hi,

There is a death notice Gloucester Citizen 11 October 1882 -

Dancey - Oct 9 at the Infirmary Glos. Anne Dancey wife of James Dancey of St Catherine Street, aged 36 years.

So perhaps the above is Mary Ann.

James seems to be quite an interesting character  :)

I think you have found Mary Ann's death because they were living at 10, Catherine Street.

Thank You.

Her last child born June qtr 1882 Lily Mabel died Sept qtr 1882 4 months old so maybe she had trouble giving birth and never recovered.

The death registered Alice aged 36 could well be her then because there's not another.

I wish I could have a look at the original image but not one on family search.

There's a death notice in the Gloucester Citizen 25 August 1882 for Lily Mabel Dancey. She died 24 August 1882 at 23 Ryecroft Street, Glos. age 4m 10 days.

Lily Mabel might have been being looked after by someone while her mother was in infirmary. As the address was different from the father.

Another thing that stands out is James married illegally Priscilla in 1885 done his prison sentence and is then back with Alice in 1891 with one of Mary Ann's daughters and two of their daughters Adelaide born 1889 and they have named one of them Beatrice PRISCILLA born 1888.Priscilla being the name of the woman he married but neither of them have a mother's maiden name.

Now in 1901 when Alice as disappeared he is in Birmingham with Priscilla again along with Beatrice (cant find Adelaide in 1901 but she married in 1909)the daughters of Alice and two more daughters from Priscilla.

So because Beatrice is with her father and not her mother Alice could have died but would probably be in Birmingham.

Class: RG13; Piece: 2867; Folio: 134; Page: 40

No corresponding birth record to separate her from Adelaide DANCEY, very curious

It is a shock.

Now Priscilla Dancey(Wood) was born in Newent in 1862 so George could be her brother but Eliza could she have adopted her.

The mind boggles

Now that makes me think even more now that her mother Alice had died.

Maybe James bumped her off?.He had his own Dentistry in Birmingham Gibson, Dancey &Co. and was a Chemist as well.

I mean she has just totally disappeared, along with Henry/Harry

Daniel mothers maiden name Wood died same year aged 0.

If Alice hadn't been with James in 1891 it would make more sense and Priscilla was I 1891 was back at home with her parents as a single woman Priscilla Wood.

It looks like Alice didn't have any children.

Well not with James that I can see, I will have a look at Warwickshire records see if there is a sign of her on there.

It seems weird she would look after children that her husband had fathered with another woman. It's like rubbing her nose in it ~ with what he'd done.

I'd love to see what happened to her :)

I think that's the biggest mystery of All what happened to her.
If we had a death it would help or even a marriage for an Alice Dancey.
I did see a marriage in 1906 for an Alice Haines in 1906 in Birmingham. That was to a George EDMONDS or Albert Robinson.

Would it be possible for me to find out more details of his imprisonment for bigamy in 31/10/1885
at Gloucester.I would like to know if it was the marriage to Priscilla in 1885.I presume it was. Before we found Mary Anne's death I thought it may be the one to Alice in 1883.Because she would have reverted back to her maiden name but she was in 1891 with him.

We can rule out the 1906 marriage, it isn't online but this Alice Haines married George Edmonds as a widow. They are together in 1911 with her daughter Florance Haines and Alice's mother Alice Oakley.

Gloucester Citizen 02 October 1885 -

James Dancey was charged with marrying Priscilla Wood in Newent on 12 August 1885. Priscilla said that she knew at the time of marriage that James had a wife living with another man in Cheltenham, declaring that his first wife left and broke up the family leaving their five children with nobody to act as a mother.

Cheltenham Chronicle 10 November 1885 -

James pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 6 months hard labour.

Some newspapers has his name as James Campbell Dancey.

Belatedly I have seen this post. I think through correspondence with others you have established the death of Mary Ann on 09 October 1882.

This is an extract posted to my tree in Ancestry

The 1881 census has the whole family, plus Maria Wood a cousin , resident at 10, St. Catherine's St. Sadly, from the same archive as above, the Gloucester Citizen records under Deaths, the death of Ann Dancey, wife of James Dancey of St. Catherine's St.,  age 36 years at Gloucester Infirmary on 09 October 1882.

I have not looked for the death of Alice Haines.

Cheers

Thank you for your input. I did have that information though.

As for Alice Dancey(Haines) I cannot find her after 1891. She may have remarried or just died.
