Title: Coster from Oxford
Post by: Silkbraid on Tuesday 10 January 17 16:46 GMT (UK)
Hi, wonder if anyone can shed any light on George COSTER. He was living in London at the time of the 1841 and 1851 census, but the latter states he was from Oxford. A number of years ago I visited the local record centre but came away without managing to find a baptism for him. He was aged 49 on the 1851 census. I have been stuck at this point for a long time and wonder if there is anyone out there who perhaps knows a bit more.

Hi

Could you please give details from the 1851.  :)

The only George Coster I can see is born c1814 in Benson, Oxfordshire and living in Dorking, Surrey.

Ignore that I can see him as G Coster with wife Jane

G Coster   49   Porter bn Oxford
Jane   Coster 59   Silk Winder bn Sussex
Children bn Spitalfields
Esther 23
H Coster   20

I would think that his place of birth is actually Oxfordshire no town mentioned as with Janes Sussex also the same

1841 census for Tower Hamlets gives born in County.

Is this his marriage?

St Leonards Shoreditch
3rd Nov 1823

George Coster bach of this parish
to Jane Adams widow of this parish

George signed, Jane made mark

Witnesses Lambeth Harford (signed) and MAry Bown (mark)

If so, Esther (on 1841) may be Janes from first marriage, indeed so might "H"

Hi Rosie99 and lizdb,
Am new to this site, so not sure how to reply to you both individually or whether you can only reply to the latest post! Apologies anyway and thanks for your replies.

Yes George Coster did marry Jane Adams in 1823 at St Leonard's Shoreditch and as far as I know had 5 children. I think his wife had at least one daughter from her previous marriage as listed on the 1841 census.

I just can't seem to get any further back with this branch.

Sorry, I should have welcomed you to rootschat  :)

No need to apologise, your reply is just fine and no need to reply individually.  Do you have them in 1861

Rosie

George seems to have been admitted to Tower Hamlets Workhouse 20 Feb 1857 and discharged 28 Feb

P.S. belated Welcome to Rootschat from me too!
Your reply is fine.  The thread is like a "conversation" with anyone dipping in, so you don't need to reply individually as we all read the whole conversation so "hear" what is said!

Baptisms at Christ Church Spital fields, all with father George and mother JAne:

25 Dec 1824 - Samuel
2 Apr 1826 - Julia
31 Aug 1828 - Esther
30 Jan 1831 - Henry
12 May 1833 - Eliza

(sorry I made an error on previous post - Esther wont be from a previous marriage, I was thinking it was 1841 when she was 23 and H 20, but it was 1851, so ages fit with the above baptisms fine!)

Just to get all the info in front of us (so we don't get confused, like I do!!)

1841
Wheeler Street
George Coster 40
Jane 50
Esther 12
Henry 10
Eliza 8
Jane Adams 20

ALL say "born on county"  !

Thank you, finding my way around - at least I'm posting in the right place now!

That confirms the baptisms I have and the 1841 census information is correct.

Thanks for the info on the workhouse, I'm not surprised, although it seems a short time to be in there.

Esther Coster, age 61 of chargeable parish of Shoreditch, was admitted to Islington Workhouse 23 Jun 1884 and discharged 9th July 1884

Remember workhouses often had a hospital wing.

Just to add - I see she was a single woman, charwoman" and alos with her was Louis Coster bn 1870, "child of Esther"

Thanks for that - I had no idea about Esther's fate. This confirms the fact that she never married as well.

I've just checked the OxFHS Marriage Index. 1538-1837, for possible parents for your George Coster.

Being born c1802, some marriages stand out.

George Costar(of Aldersgate), to Mary Witchlow. 20 June 1797 @ Benson.  (Could Aldersgate, be St Aldates, Oxford,  or Aldersgate, London).??

John Costar to Sarah Clandfield. 12 July 1802 @ Oxford St. Michael.

But be aware of the fact, there are quite a few possible variations of the Surname Coster.

Costard, Costerd, Costor, Costord, Costiff, Costin.

I would ask OxFHS for a baptism search for your George Coster.  There will be a small fee.

Steve. :)

Hi Steve,

Appreciate that information - thank you. Both are possibilities for me to look into. Up till now the only baptism I could find was in 1814, which I thought was unlikely as he got married in 1823, though I know they didn't always get baptised as babies.

I have come across a couple of different spellings of Coster, but you've added a few more!

Hi Silkbraid, I have Costers too. By chance do any of yours have a Joseph? 1841 shown in Providence Place Marylebone (born not county)with Sarah, she dies later that year and children moved in with eldest and he dies of cholera 1849 having re married to Hannah. Possibly Joseph born 1/3/1791 City of London. Cheers Pete

Hi Pete,

Don't have a Joseph so far as I haven't managed to trace George's parents, so consequently don't have any siblings - sorry!

Hi everyone,

After reading your replies, I found a baptism for George Costar in 1799, son of George and Mary. I then found their marriage and it was indeed George Costar and Mary Wichelow. After many years of searching, and maybe with some more records digitised, I think this is probably my George, as the christening year varies from the birth year on the census only by a couple of years, and I haven't found anything else that's a closer match.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

So, onwards and upwards, as they say!  :)

So the marriage I found for you in 1797 @ Benson, Oxfordshire, is the correct one ;D

Where was your George Coster baptised, what part of Oxfordshire.?

Steve. :)

Hi,
Yes it was thanks.

In a place called Nettlebed, which I think is about 7 miles from Benson, where there are loads of Costars!! Two children were baptised in Nettlebed and the other two in Benson.

That's great. ;D
Yes, I don't need telling about Costers, and sooooooo many variations of the name. Been there, done that. :o

Yes, it's incredible how the spelling changes - very inconsiderate!

You obviously have Coster ancestors - which branch are you descended from?

None from Oxfordshire.

The one Coster that I have, is a leaf on twig in my tree. Hannah Coster c1801. Ford, Buckinghamshire.  I haven't gone any further for that reason.

But I did some research for a friend for Costers in Oxfordshire, many years ago, and the name stuck in my memory, because of the variations of the name.  I think they were from Chalgrove. ???
