Title: Alice Steel - Whitby
Post by: PaulFincken on Thursday 12 January 17 14:23 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I am looking for the birth of Alice Steel, or any census information. I have details to show she was born in Whitby around 1882.

Many Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

Would this be Alice's birth? -

Name:   Alice Leadley Steel
q1 1883, Whitby

If so there is no mother's maiden name recorded on the GRO website  ???

There is a marriage of an Alice Steel

q3 1883, Whitby
Vol 9d Page 640

It would appear that she married Joseph Beha

1891 -

John Beha   30
Alice Beha   25
Alice Beha   8 b. Whitby, Yorkshire (This could be the Alice Steel you are researching)
Hannah Beha   6
John W Beha   3

There is no birth record for an Alice Beha.

Thank you.....it could be the Alice L Steel born in Whitby 1883. Steel is her maiden name, would assume in a census record she would show up as Steel.

Hopefully she will show up on the one of the census records

The WW1 records for Thomas Albert Smith  say he married Alice Beha on 28 July 1900 at West Hartlepool and had child MAry Lily  on 1st Aug 1900

Is that the right family?  (your other thread indicates it might be where you ask about a Thomas Smith marrying Alice Steel)

Yes - but you need to be looking at the right family in order to find the right Thomas and Alice in order to get the right birth certs!!

DO the Thomas Smith and Alice that you are interested in have a daughter called Mary Lily, bn 1900?

There is a marriage of an Alice Steel

q3 1900, Hartlepool
Vol 10a Page 267

On the same page is a Thomas Albert Smith

On Thomas Albert's Service record he records his marriage to Alice Beha Hartlepool 28 July 1900. One of the witnesses was Anna Beha.

Daughter Mary Lily born 1 Aug 1900, Hartlepool

So looking at the marriages that were recorded and declared I'm still of the opinion that Alice Steel and Alice Beha are the same person.

JJ

Added - Whoops sorry lizdb I see that you have already come to a similar conclusion  :)

Interesting - as they had allegedly married a few days before Mary Lily was born, so would expect her to be Smith with mmn Steel or Beha

Found a couple of articles in old newspapers, one regarding Alice (mother) in court in 1883 and the other is a photo of five generations of the family

Just has a real good chance to look at the picture in more detail.

This Alice Steel is definitely the right family - Lilt Forsyth is my dad's mam, and her mam was Alice Steel. She died in July 1938, 3 months after giving birth to my dad. He was adopted by the Finckens after her death.

This picture is the only one I know of showing Lily Forsyth. From the dates, she would have been pregnant with my dad.

I assume from the picture Lily Forsyth is back row on the right.

Cant believe this was found and helps paint a picture for some of my relatives.
