Title: Miners Hostel Mexborough 1950's
Post by: moiramount on Friday 13 January 17 12:09 GMT (UK)
Looking for info on a miners hostel in Adwick road, Mexborough which was around in the late 1940's /50,s. It housed a lot of men so must have been a big building. Is it still standing. My grandfather and his brother lived there in 1951. They were miners so wondered what pit they would have worked in. They came over from Ireland around this time.

Hi Moira  :)  There is a building called "The Miners Lodge" on Doncaster road in Mexborough, built in the early 1900's, it contains apartments now, I wonder if that was it.

Frank.

Added, the above place may have been an inn as well, built 1904, it was a big place looking at the second picture.

Hi Frank, you pop up everywhere. This is the Flannery saga again. I found them on the electoral roll living in the miners hostel on Adwick road. I dont know if you know Mexboro at all but this is the road that runs from the main roundabout up to the Montagu Hospital, not far from my sisters. We found the elusive Frank Flannery as Francis living with John in the hostel in 1951. On his marriage cert to my friends grandmother he put a sheffield address, this was August 1951. Hes a very elusive man. I have sent an email to Mexboro heritage society asking them if they knew where it was.

Hi Moira,
Just seen your rather old post, but thought I might be able to shed some light on the hostel.
I lived there for about two years when I was 16/17 years old in 1955/1956
The hostel was about opposite to the Montague Hospital on Adwick Road, and consisted of a series of Nissan huts served by a common boiler house for heating and hot water, large dining hall, sick bay, tea bar which served soft drinks, cakes etc, and recreation facilities to include table tennis and snooker. (Welfare Block)
My dad was the manager there for that period and we lived in a separate hut close to the hostel entrance. The inside of the Nissan Huts was very acceptable ( despite the name!) although the carpets were what we knew as cocoa matting.
I remember that quite a lot of Hungarians Miners came in 1956 following the uprising.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Nigel

Welcome to rootschat, Jules64.

Is there anything in particular you want help with, or can you supply any more information about the accommodation.

I did a google search and found this relating to Mansfield - do you think it is based on the same set-up?
