After years of resistance to the idea I've finally gone Private with my Ancestry Tree. This last week or so I've found new info regarding my Griffiths family.Looking at the new findings tonight someone has erased what I found and put completely extraneous info in its place. Its going to take quite a bit of sleight of hand to put things right.

I don't understand how that can happen - do you mean that they've changed your tree? The only people that can do that are people that you've invited to see your tree as an editor, if they are just a guest they can see it but not change it. If your tree is public and you haven't invited anyone to share it they can't change anything.
-
I went private several years ago for the same reason.
I am more than happy to share if someone contacts me and they are genuine.
Good luck
Trish

Will going Private ensure that the said info isn't changed again?

I'm with groom on this one, it's not possible for someone else to change your tree surely.
Frank.

Yes, I agree Groom and jess5athome - could only be an invited guest who altered something. How rude of them to do it without asking ?

It will as no -one will see it unless you allow them to. However no-one can change a public tree unless as I said you have invited them as an editor.
-
Thanks Sarah,of course there is no knowing whose been changing it is there?

So they won't be allowed to do this with my Tree being private?

The changes that the person made anyway were pure fantasia.

Who have you shared your tree with? If you haven't shared it with anyone then you need to contact Ancestry and ask how someone has been able to change it. It just isn't possible for any uninvited person to change anything in a tree, otherwise people could go in and change everyones just for the fun of it!
-
There should be an option for what you want them to see, such as Guest, where they don't any rights to alter the tree or contribute a photo, but just see the tree. I could be wrong and things might have changed since I was invited to view a Private tree a few years ago.

Hi, I think (and absolutely no offence meant or intended) that you are missing what is being said to you :)
Absolutely no one can change what you have put on your tree, you need to contact Ancestry if this is what has happened.
Best regards always
Frank ;)

I agree Frank. You need to contact Ancestry, William.

Someone somehow must have your account log-in details or you have given someone editing rights.
If it's the former it won't make any difference whether your tree is public or private as they can still use your log-in to make changes.
-
That's why William needs to check with Ancestry if he is certain that he hasn't given anyone editor rights. Might be a good idea in the meantime to change your password.
-
Ancestry SHOULD be able to discover who has access to your tree, from their data logging system. Any good data log should be able to state who worked on your tree, at what time and date, and with what authority.

I have previously given a few people editing rights as I thought this would merely give them access to living persons data.I didn't expect any of them to make changes without telling me.

I'm afraid that is your answer then. The best thing is to only give them guest rights, then they can see all the tree but not change it.
The problem now is that I'm not sure, as you have already given them access, whether changing to private would stop them seeing it. The best thing would be to go into your tree management and either delete them so they don't have access or change their status to guest.

Will the guest status give them access to living persons?

There lies the problem I'm afraid, and as groom says the only way may be to give them guest rights, although I would be tempted to contact Ancestry to see how you could "Eliminate" all guests and then make your tree private to see if that helped :-\
Frank.
-
It does indeed appear as if I've brought a lot of this on myself.I've been granting editor status almost as a default position. However I have now changed them all to guest.

Yes, I'm a guest on a few trees and can see everything.
-
I'm a guest on a few trees and can't see living people.
-
There is an option to allow them to see living people. You need to go into sharing and tick "Can see living people" I allow people I know are definitely connected to see living but untick it for those I'm not too sure about.
