Hello
Austin Purcell
Born 1890
Military Number (2649)
Served with the
Duke of Wellington
1/5 Th in (1915)
Thank you
For anybody's help.
-
It will have been moved to the board where it is most likely to get the best response. Usually this is done by a moderator. The moving is helpful, and can put your request in front of a larger number of potential helpers.
-
Austin appears in the 1891 and 1901 censuses in Halifax, the youngest of a fair number of children of Patrick Purcell, born in Ireland, and his wife Mary Ann. In 1911 he's still with his parents, and is listed as a French Polisher, living in Old Road, Birkinshaw, still in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Is any of this of the slightest help?
-
I have been looking for Austin all week but can't find a death for him. :)

If, as seems likely, the Nellie Purcell who (re)married in 1933 to Harry Waterhouse was Austin's wife - do you have a copy of that marriage record to validate Nellie's given marital status - i.e. does she there declare herself to be widowed?
If nothing else this would confirm that Austin had died by then and would save you from (possibly) fruitlessly searching the 1939 Register (wherein, of course, a Nellie Waterhouse can be readily found). Additionally the 1933 marriage record will tell where Nellie was living at the time.
Regarding Austin's probable demise at a relatively early age, could this have been associated with a combination of his exposure to french polishing materials from a young age and his kidney problems during his WW1 service?

There is a full medical history on the 1st World War Pension Claim, of Austin ( No Michael ) Purcell, it confirms he was discharged as physically unfit 21st November 1917 and was intending to return to an address in Bradford, Bottoms, Berkenshaw, nr Bradford, it also confirms his father was a Patrick.

The pension records give 4 different service numbers

The records say that Austin was a wheel wright in Civil life ???
-
Patrick Purcell
His father is a wheelwright.
Austin Purcell the
Son is a French polisher
-
Austin stated that he worked for Farnell and sons in Brightington? near Leeds as a Wheel wright for 3 years before enlisting.
-
Thankyou
For the information.
-
It seems likely that Austin changed trades after the war because either his previous occupation was too strenuous, or just because there was less work for a wheelwright as motor transport took over from horses.

Hi
If you look at the top of your post you will see it has been viewed by over 400 people. If any of them was able to help with info - it would have been posted so there is no need to refresh your post.
If, as seems likely, the Nellie Purcell who (re)married in 1933 to Harry Waterhouse was Austin's wife - do you have a copy of that marriage record to validate Nellie's given marital status - i.e. does she there declare herself to be widowed?
Can you reply to this please?
If he just "disappeared" and given his father was Irish - have you looked at Irish deaths?
Does the daughters 1952 marriage cert show him as deceased?
-

Hello Heatherjulie
I phoned the estate agents
Who put me in touch with
The surveyor,
The guy is going to ask
The housekeeper because
The place has been empty
For some time and he
Himself has not seen the
War memorial.
I explained that the details
Are on WWW.warmemorialsonline.
Org.uk As they would also
Like any information on
War memorials photos
Conditions vandalism etc.
I was informed that it could
Have been moved by the
Owners
was it a
Donation?
Council property.? Etc.
-
Birkenshaw Village Association has a facebook group so I have just sent them a message to see if anyone knows where the war memorial from Birkenshaw Bottoms is.
