Title: Albert Edward Price - need help with birth please
Post by: Ali Smith on Sunday 15 January 17 13:17 GMT (UK)
Need help please - my g grandfather is Albert Edward Price ( on census in 1911 he is shown as born about 1871 in Leominster - on 1901 census shown as born about 1871 in Cholstrey in Herefordshire ) - I have his marriage certificate 1893 married in Hentland in Herefordshire of full age marrying Fanny Jane Ree - his father is shown as James .
I sent off for the Albert Edward Price born in 1871 in Leominster - this has come and it shows his father as William and mother as Sarah nee Goode so looks like wrong one
My dads cousin was born in Leominster ( he was her granddad and she said he was an only child born in Knighton near Leominster ? there is a Kington near Leominster and Knighton is in Powys or Shropshire not far away
On GRO I can find a Albert Price born 1870 in Kington , one born in Ludlow 1868 and one born in Knighton in 1868
I cant find any on the census with a father James and no other children - can anyone help please

He ought to be this one

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ja7/,

With the christening 6months after the birth I wonder if he was actually born somewhere else.

Mazi - that is who I thought it was so sent off for that but his father is William on the birth certificate born 22nd July 1871 and registered in August in Leominster

On the wedding certificate it looks like occupation is road or railman

There is an Albert price with father William in Leominster in the 1881, father is a mason, so it looks like this is the cert. you have bought, he has bros and sisters so is likely not yours.

The baptism Mazi has sent a link to shows father as James  :)

It is the late christening that worries me, christened at 6 months he would always have thought he was born there, but could have been born elsewhere.

How sure is your cousin that he was an only child and born in Kington or Knighton.

My dad's cousin is now dead but gone back through letters - she has been spot on with other details so think possibly right
The baptism does show father as James but the birth certificate shows William for the Albert Edward who was born on that date  22nd July and his father was a mason as you say so that is the wrong one .
I could buy three GRO certificates but not sure I will be any further forward and too expensive

You can ask for the certificate ONLY if the father is Wiiliam.

You could also approach the local registration office and explain the situation, maybe email giving what you know and have already done. Most of them are very helpful.

Was it Albert or his father who was a road or rail man, if it was his father James as on the marriage cert. then the family could have moved around a bit.

Have you checked those births on the new GRO index which gives mothers maiden names, you may be able to work out who the parents are then by looking for marriages that fit

That is a good idea so there is a facility on GRO for only ordering if the father is called James ?
I may have to go to Hereford in the end I think to look in person but am going to be recuperating from an operation later this week so hoping to take some leaps forward

Thank you  :)

It was father James who was a road or railman - Albert was a porter ( he later drove a bus between a hotel and the railway station in Leominster )

I am trying to work out why the marriage was in hentland, fanny jane was born in Ocle Pychard near
Bromyard, and I think was working as a kitchen maid in 1891 in Burghill possibly at the hospital there, so no connection to hentland there.

Hence the speculation that railmen and their family can move around every few years.

On the marriage certificate it says her residence was Hoarwithy which is where her family are - his residence says Burghill I think but cant find a James Price there that fits - she is a servant on the certificate and he is a porter - can I scan it and put it up ? or can I put a bit in with snipping

You can put bits up, but not the whole cert.
The bit you put up must have a size less than 500kb.

But, if Albert is a porter in burghill when he married it seems possible that he is a porter in the same hospital as fanny,  we may need a census expert for this as institutions are difficult to find.

I am going to double check that census for Fanny in 1891 but think it should be right - cant see how to attach an image

In 1891 Fanny is in the Hereford County & City Asylum - Pauper Lunatic Asylum, Burghill
Fanny Sarah Jane Ree - 20- Kitchenmaid - Single -place of birth NK

Could this be Albert in 1891 - Corn Square, Leominster
Albert Price - Servant -Single- 19 - occ Milk Salesman   born Leominster, Herefordshire living in the household of John B Cullis a butcher & Farmer

I have been thinking that's him Rosie - a milk salesman- porter seems a reasonable move.

The family Rea /Ree were living in Hoarwithy in 1891 - father was a shepherd so possibly she could have been working there - not sure where the sarah would have come from - far as I know she was Fanny Jane
I have him as a milk salesman but again not sure on that one - so many albert Prices to choose from
