Post by: red3 on Wednesday 18 January 17 23:23 GMT (UK)
Hi
I have a Joseph GHENT (sometimes GENT) married to Sarah  married sometime before 1826.
I can not find a marrriage record for this couple.

I have a Newspaper record Nottingham Review and General Advertiser 6 Dec 1839
At Averham on Monday evening aged 33 years Sarah the belovered wife of Mr Ghent leaving a family of 9 children to lament their loss.

For children I have.
Baptism records St Michael and all Angels at Averham
1. Martha 1831
2.Elizabeth 1833
3.John 1835
4.Aaron Nov 1839 Twin died 1840
5. Moses Nov 1839 twin died 1840

Then from the 1841 UK census
6. Ann 1826
7.Joseph 1829 (on UK census 71,81,91 birth place listed as HAVERSHAM) Then in 1911 AVERHAM
I can not work out where Haversham parish is??
8. William1837
Can not find where these 3 were baptised.

Is anyone able to spot the 9th child? Thinking maybe the eldest child?

Joseph remarries to Ann SNAITH 29 June1840
Lincolnshire chronicle 3 July 1840
At Averham near Newark on Monday last Mr Joseph Gent to Widow Snaith. (Mary Ann)

Joseph remarries 1860 to Elizabeth GIBSON

A possibility...
Baptisms Rolleston
24-2-1805 Willm son of Willm & Mary Gent
16-9-1808 John Cullen son of Willm & Mary Gent

Marriage Morton
19-7-1802 William Gent and Mary Cullen... so if the parents of Joseph, they only just managed to get the marriage in before the baptism!

Hi Larkspur
Thank you will have a search around and see what I can come up with.

I have spotted the William Ghent to Mary Cullen but they do not quite match up with the family I appear to be following.

The Baptisms at Rolleston look like a strong possibity.

Regards Red3

If the baptisms at Rolleston look promising surely the fact one child is baptised John Cullen Gent , leans towards the chance that his mothers maiden name was Cullen  ???

Hi Larkspur
There are two William Gents around this time.

William GENT and Mary CARNELL married 20 Feb 1798 at Bulwell
and
William GENT and Mary CULLEN married 1802 at Morton.

There is a witness called Samuel GENT on the marriage of Joseph GENT and Sarah DOUGHTY.
Not sure who Samuel is. Other witness is James Barnsdale (the parish clerk)

Hi Red, have a look on a map at the locations.

Morton by Fiskerton is just down the road from Averham, where as Bulwell is further afield being the other side of Nottingham.

I think the Morton marriage is the correct one and is the one I have used in my tree. Given the use of Cullen as a Middle name for their Son John , I think the case is solid.

Cheers, Ade.

Hi Ade
Joseph GENT married Sarah DOUGHTY 14 Feb 1826 at Beckingham Lincolnshire.  Witness SAmuel GENT and James BARNSDALE ( who appears to be the parish clerk)
Sarah is listed of this parish and Joseph is listed as from elsewhere.

Baptism record for Sarah daughter of Robert and Ann Doughty 19 Feb 1809. At Beckingham Lincolnshire.

On the 1841 UK Census there is an Ann Doughty living near Joseph and Mary Ghent at Averham Southwell.  She is recorded as a widow pouper aged 66years.

I see what you mean by the map.  Yes I would say Mary Cullen is  our lady.

Is that the family at Fiskerton Rolleston Southwell Notts.  in 1841
William (1781) Mary (1781) John 1811 John 1796 William 1806 ?

Hi Ade
I think you have an error in your tree.  You have George GHENT 1842- son of Joseph.

Joseph Gent born 1881 (married Bertha Jones) was the son of William Gent (1837- 1919) and Sarah (Allen).

You can follow them in the Census by following Sarah GENT born Chipstone Nottinghamshire 1840.
William sometimes uses the name George for some reason.
