Post by: dshoyt on Saturday 21 January 17 19:13 GMT (UK)
Looking for ancestors of Samuel Logan Nicol b. 24 Feb 1879, Wishaw, Cambusnetthan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I believe his father and mother are John Nicol b. 1851, Ireland and Agnes Logan b. 1852, Ireland but I have no confirmation on this. Samuel m. 1900 Annie McQuillan? b. 27 Feb 1881, Newarthill, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Yes, looks like it, too bad her mother's name isn't included but it may very well be on the death certificate. I assume the Andrew Nicol who was buried 4 days previously was her brother-in-law and the Rafferty/Galloway entries his descendants. Looks like his wife was Isabella Haggerty.
There may be a headstone at this grave, I'll have a look as soon as I can.

There is a good chance this could be the family returning to Glasgow although different occupation for John Nicol ..
John Nicol age 52 farmer
Annie Nicol age 30
Thomas Nicol age 22
Departure St John New Brunswick Canada
Arrival date 3 November 1904 Glasgow ..

Then there is another  passenger list arrival date 5 June 1911 New York
Thomas Nicol age 29 coal miner last address Bellshill Lanarkshire
Maggie Nicol age 22 wife
Andrew Nicol age 36 coal miner single
All going to brother Samuel L Nicol they mention a sister Mrs Paul Motherwell Road Bellshill last address came from

A thomas Nicol married Margaret Jane Watters 1910 Dalziel Lanarkshire
Isabella Nicol married Joseph Paul 1907 Dalziel Lanarkshire so this would be the sister that was mentioned ..A death for a John Nicol 1906 Dalziel Lanarkshire age 55 could possibly be the father
All these can be found on Scotlands People ..Just confirming all these to the names mentioned on the passenger lists

Thank you Rosie17, your census data confirmed and added data for me. The link www.Scotlandpeople.gov di dnot work for me for some reason but based on your data and Lodger's input, I am leaning toward Agnes death in 1892.

Thanks Lodger. Your plot entries should add significant value. I feel like this may be my Agnes. I suspect the rest at D375 are her siblings. I was excited to see John at 17 months (I definitely would have missed this).

Rosie17, the passenger lists were awesome. It looks like Isabella didn't come back in 1904, but I have her married to a Joseph Paul, which fits Thomas' 1911 trip (Here I think Andrew is his brother born in 1875).

Hi no Isabella did not come back with the family in 1904 still looking for her returning to UK before her marriage to Joseph Paul ..Yes Thomas and Andrew are brothers a possible record for Andrew returning back to Scotland in 1913 ..Not seeing Thomas or his wife in USA either could have came back or went to Canada ...You should be able to connect to www.scotlandspeople.gov.UK

Rosie
Should be all lower case problem with using kindle  ;)

anne_p, wow that was interesting. Being a big fan of marriage dates and middle names I got quite a bit there. It is interesting that you came up with 'Nancy' vice 'Agnes' for my GG-grandmother. I liked the references and the links.  I would guess that she might have been 'Agnes Nancy Logan' or 'Nancy Agnes Logan.' I suppose that John might have been married twice also.

"Nancy" is  often/usually a variant of Agnes.
It can also be a variant of Ann

Yes Rosie, most people that I know named Nancy were actually  Agnes.

My Aunt/Godmother was also known as Nancy, so I also assumed her birth name was Agnes.
I discovered that I was named for her and her birth name was......Anne!

Hi Dave if you descend from John Nicol and Agnes/Annie Logan then there is a chance we're related. John was likely an older son of Andrew Nicol and Isabella Haggerty/Hegarty/Higgerly, and I descend from a younger son also named Andrew and wife Janet Caskie McConnell. Andrew the elder is the one buried in Cambunesthan Cemetery along with some other family members: Agnes Nicol, daughter of Samuel Logan is Samuel Logan Nicol’s mother, the stillborn baby girl Rafferty is the daughter of Samuel’s sister Isabella and husband Edward Rafferty, Margaret Galloway is the daughter of John’s older sister Margaret and (possibly 1st husband) Robert Galloway, Margaret Galloway aged 59 years is his older sister, and John Nicol aged 17 months is Samuel Logan’s older brother. All this is speculation for now, aside from Andrew the elder and Andrew the younger which are confirmed.

I've taken a DNA test have you? This would probably help us confirm our relationship. Please let me know if you would care to pursue further communication. Regards, Mark Nicol mnicol [at] nildram dot co dot uk
